I have a somewhat decent CPU: 3.2GHz Phenom II X6 with 6 cores. 8GB RAM and ATI 6750 1GB.
That said, the game runs smooth in every screen EXCEPT the character creation screen. The one that shows when you press [New game].
That screen rapes one of the processor cores to 100% and activates turbocore on it. CPU fans go loud! There is probably a tight loop in the code running on that screen.
It is still responsive and runs smooth but I can't understand how the character creation screen can use more CPU than WoW or Dirt3 for example.
Getting reports on the #tome IRC of other people experiencing the same thing. In addition, if the game lets you past this window, the descriptions for talents et all will be corrupt, and the game will crash upon loading a map.
It started on my laptop. I had been playing without any problem for several days (hadn't added any new addons in a couple days, either, by this point), and then this issue started happening. Like the above poster, my machine starts devouring processor and RAM, going up to over 2GB of ram usage. It starts going slow at 19% on the bar in the loading screen, and starts chugging. It generally gets up to about 70% before the screen stops updating, and the program goes unresponsive. This is where it usually crashes.
If it's still going, it'll pop up again on the spend-1st-level-points screen. When I hover over a skill for its description in the right panel, that panel is full of garbage for several seconds. If I leave it hovering over the same one, it sometimes decides it's going to update that panel properly. Sometimes not. Regardless, when I exit that screen and attempt to get going, the game crashes.
Here's a couple fun bits of extra info:
I normally play in Normal difficulty, on Adventure mode, as I have not unlocked most things and have not beaten the game yet. (I haven't even been up Dreadfell Tower yet. Ever.)
If I create the character in offline mode and save it, I can load it up in online mode. This obviously precludes Stone Wardens and the Exploration mode, as I am a donator.
Creating a character in Exploration mode seems to have worked.
What this tells me is, something is horribly wrong in my online profile files. I just wish I knew what!
Huh. No corruption, but the character creation screen (where you choose race/class/etc.) has jacked my CPU use to 100% since... forever, as near as I can recall. It's been around for a while. Fairly sure I've mentioned it a couple of times, I'unno. Pretty much just that screen, effect goes away as soon as selections are made and I actually get into the game. Never really bothered to try and figure out what the cause is, m'self.

Yeah it doesn't crash or freeze. Just 100% CPU on the character creation screen.
Even after I turned dynamic background off. Version 1.0. No additional mods.
Turns out it was a bad addon after all, though no idea why it let me connect for several days before deciding it was broken. Sorry for the false alarm.
I have a dual core CPU, and i just tested that New character menu with the task monitor, and it is eating both CPU at between 50 and 60 % , with the the background disabled !
Sure it's not as horrible as you guys with 100% but there's obviously something very wrong for a simple menu to eat that much CPU power, i wonder if there's other very wrong things regarding CPU usage then going on during the game.
