Race Through Fire credit
Ran the race, killed the funky boss and looted it. Talked to high paladin who seemed to be happy to hear about the summoning being stuopped, but... triggered the unhappy aeryn near the end anyway. Chat led me to believe that if i killed the boss and looted it i had indeed 'won' and should not have seen that unhappy consequence, though i have no clear failures to compare it to.

You always face the boss, what matters is if you got there in time or not

The Faeros boss always spawns when the Sorcerers leave, whether its because you forced them out or because they completed the ritual. Beating the boss does not mean you beat the ritual. What's the quest description in your journal?
