slow/freezing on startup

The game tends to be a resource hog for reasons I can't understand (usually taking about 50% of my cpu), but that doesn't usually cause a problem - instead what's killing it for me is trying to load up the game in the first place. It takes forever for the main menu to come up (sits on a black screen), and now it doesn't seem to ever want to come up. This problem appears to have gotten worse after the game suddenly closed today when I went to start a new game. I haven't been able to get it to come back up and play since. Any ideas?

I also can only close T-Engine by going into the task manager and killing it when it freezes on startup like this.

What are your system specs? CPU, RAM, graphics card, operating system...?

Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 at 2 GHz, 4GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 with 512 MB.

Upgrading to beta 21 solved the problem, though. However, now all my unlocks are gone (I have logged into my online profile). Any way to get them back?
