There seems to be a bug in the apprentice mage quest.
While speaking to the mage, whenever you choose the dialog option to give an artifact and close the inventory window afterwards, the mage thanks you. Then it returns to the dialog menu.

Also the dialog includes the "I have something for you" and "Perhaps this should be enough" options if you have anything available for him... but giving only works from the inventory, so any staff/jewelery equipped will trigger pointless menu options.
