When encountering hostile creatures on the world map, you can attack once on the world map before the encounter itself.

Not just once. I've exchanged quite a few blows with a bear.
We couldn't really hurt each other(though I did daze him with the berserker passive somehow)..I wandered around the wild for a while though, and eventually the 'true' encounter/ambush with the bear triggered
