apprentice quest

I managed to complete the apprentice quest without having the staff removed from my inventory. When the inventory screen appeared in order for me to select the staff, the highlighted bar was on the left hand side (equipment), when i pressed enter the quest succeeded as per normal, yet the staff remains.

I have reproduced it.....what do you want to know?

Happens when you say... i have found this staff, maybe it is powerful enough.
Then when the inventory pops open do not select the staff, instead select something on the left hand side of the screen.

In main hand
In off hand
On fingers
...
