Can't 'L'ook at vault items

#1 Post by Susramanian »

... even if you're in the vault, standing right next to the item. I ran into this problem in a crypt yesterday. Those little rooms are filled with loot and traps, but with no skill at disarming traps and no way to see what the items on the ground were, I just had to eat a trap to stand over each item and decide whether I wanted to pick it up. It occurs to me now that I didn't try using the mouse, so I don't know if this applies to mouse tooltips as well.

Light and vision spells/scrolls should help.

The problem seems to be that only the permanent light level of a square is checked for the purpose of allowing or disallowing the tooltip.
It should be the current lightlevel instead.

This issue is still around, and I found a problem that compounds it. When an item is on whatever trap gives you the message 'X seems less active,' and you step on it, you don't get a message in your log about what you just stood on. Stepping on the trap, hitting g, and seeing what lands in your inventory is the only way to find out what the item is.

I've always found non-random traps a downer - they take over, and e.g. when the cavern-type vaults in ToME 2 start being a sea of traps I usually sigh and ignore them unless there's something in particular that's wanted. Same with trapped chests, if you trap them all it becomes only a chore. IMO should be "oh bugger, a trap !" and when they are present as a matter of course, that stops being the case.
