Second Mac guy who cant push achievements (last post currently):

I followed the steps above and pushed the achievements through while in game. Nothing happened until I earned an achievement then the Steam app registered all achievements across my characters (after Steam and before). However when checking status in a common web browser (Safari) Steam still shows achievement count at zero. Using Mac 10.6.8
