however, you can manipulate the sandworms so that they do tunnel right next to the stairs, it may take some planning, but watch them as they go around the rooms.

This may be related... I found 2 wolves in the old forest walled off by trees, using vision and sense.

Maybe some cranky old wizard phase doored them into the trees? Similar reasoning could be used to explain artifacts in walled off areas (wizard carved an unnaccessible vault only can phase door in, a druid's home, but he is out enjoying nature, etc, etc...)

The game freezes if the herald at the end of moria walks towards you and speaks with you while you are resting... Luckily closing the window and thus force Save&Exit worked.

Basically the behavior of the game seems similar to the b8 self-target bug.

No, sorry. Before I filed the bug report I wanted to check if the char is still stuck when I login again and (obviously) the stdout got overwritten before I realized it. :(

This just happened to me, except I wasn't resting -- I was still in combat with some orcs. The workaround (close the window) worked. I don't have a log -- I don't think they are generated on Mac.

Alright, made sure not to rest this time and the bug still crops up.

I wasn't in combat with any orcs that I know of.

Next time I try this I'm going to not loot until after I talk to dude.

Third time's the charm apparently.

I didn't loot until after I talked to the herald but now I'm thinking that it might it have to do with Gorbulg's script.

I'm not sure I triggered it the first two times I fought him. I Phase Doored him around a corner and aggrod him with Vapor the first two fights. The third time I dumped him in a spot that was with in LOS and opened up with Flame which triggered his dialog box and it seemed out of the ordinary (I remembered it from a previous character but didn't remember seeing it on either of my two previous fights that bugged out).

*Checking the log of the second fight I don't see his dialog box triggered so maybe that has something to do with it*

To make an addition to edge's suspicion:

When it happened to me, the Golbulg script was triggered (if you mean the little prefight smalltalk with him). I opened the last of the 5(?) doors, he spoke and I nuked the hell out of him and his companions with inferno+vapor+manathrust. I did not move myself, what means that he died directly in "his" room and the herald ran into me while I was still standing (well, resting...) in the doorway.
