I'm trying the Infinite Dungeon for the first time and it's beyond slow for me, too. The standard game gets very slow at times (esp. in certain locations, like the Old Forest and Bree during the elemental invasion), but this is awful.

FYI by Bree and the Old Forest I mean whatever the hell they're called now. I still haven't gotten used to the new names since the setting change. :P

Also, this is version 0.9.15.

When I tried the Infinite Dungeon, there was a massive vault in every level I entered, causing the 'swimming through syrup' to show up at irregular invervals, especially when near the vault. The floating text on the screen may have an influence on the general speed and CPU use.

What I don't understand is why a cleared vault still shows the same slow downs.

I'm getting the same issue as Runescrye. Infinite dungeons seems to be slow as well, but that might be due to the vaults. However, lag spikes will occur even while doing something like targeting an enemy with an ability, which probably has nothing at all to do with the rest of the units on the map, unless it's checking everything in the dungeon level as a potential target.

Problem is persisting into beta 16.

Try lowering your particle effects from 100 to something more like 10 or 20, and lower your FPS from 30 to 20 or 10 - that should help with overall slowness. Also, disable the fancy shaders and text, along with the fancy mouse. You can also make the game auto save at the beginning of each level, that makes the save files and logs smaller, making the game [probably] not get as bad as quickly.

None of that helps. I can literally fight all the way through to Bill and back out without even a tiny hiccup of delay, but if I hop onto the world map for a single turn and back into the dungeon, it starts to lag immediately, and persists wherever I go.

Unfortunately I have to report the same issue in beta 16. As soon as the game saves and you enter a dungeon, it lags.

When it saves ? but saving should be real fast now no ? If you disabled background saves do you still get the lag while playing ?

Disabled both background saves and autosave... wow! this is *much* faster when you leave town...
This should be off by default... It's much nicer that way. The only thing is to remember to save the game periodically if you fear bugs and crashes...

... but the game is still lagging :(

Got this while moving (nothing in sight, no sustained talents):

Code: Select all

[LOG]	Digging starts...
[LOG]	Dug for 17 turns.
[LOG]	Wall turns into floor.
24 frames in 1.032 seconds = 23.2558 FPS (29 keyframes)
25 frames in 1.003 seconds = 24.9252 FPS (33 keyframes)
24 frames in 1.002 seconds = 23.9521 FPS (29 keyframes)
25 frames in 1.003 seconds = 24.9252 FPS (32 keyframes)
375 ticks in 12.338 seconds = 30.3939 TPS
25 frames in 1 seconds = 25 FPS (31 keyframes)
24 frames in 1.12 seconds = 21.4286 FPS (29 keyframes)
22 frames in 1.043 seconds = 21.093 FPS (31 keyframes)
20 frames in 1.028 seconds = 19.4553 FPS (29 keyframes)
24 frames in 1.009 seconds = 23.7859 FPS (38 keyframes)
26 frames in 1.042 seconds = 24.952 FPS (33 keyframes)
24 frames in 1.037 seconds = 23.1437 FPS (29 keyframes)
23 frames in 1.075 seconds = 21.3953 FPS (30 keyframes)
6 frames in 1.032 seconds = 5.81395 FPS (9 keyframes)
2 frames in 1.031 seconds = 1.93986 FPS (11 keyframes)
258 ticks in 10.115 seconds = 25.5067 TPS
5 frames in 1.185 seconds = 4.21941 FPS (78 keyframes)
10 frames in 1.076 seconds = 9.29368 FPS (72 keyframes)
23 frames in 1.044 seconds = 22.0307 FPS (75 keyframes)
[Identify]	stralite longsword	true
[LOG]	There is an item here: #FFFFFF#stralite longsword (32.5-45.5 power, 5 apr)#LAST#
24 frames in 1.038 seconds = 23.1214 FPS (33 keyframes)
[Identify]	stralite longsword	true
[LOG]	Splat picks up (j.): #FFFFFF#stralite longsword (32.5-45.5 power, 5 apr)#LAST#.
These slight slowdowns occur periodically, but systematically...

No idea... could be anything, unless you have wizard mode and can see monsters/layout.

Here's a savefile to toy with:

http://www.humyo.fr/FMyXqZf/save.7z?a=mYQU5lxrXAg

Bottom Rak'Shor pride, cleared from all monsters. No vault on the level. Just moving around causes lag after a while, and it's periodic...

Seeing the descriptions of this jerky sluggishness reminds me of a thread some versions ago (link) where I was trying to explain the same phenomenon. Fixing the page fault thing definitely helped, but I still get some stuttering after playing. What I normally do is clear the first level of the Trollmires, and head to the Old Forest for some risky power leveling. This is when I can start noticing stuttering, and it's worse each level I go down... Ah, there's a new version, so let's see what happens.

Now an interesting thing is happening... After the jerkiness, ToME will suddenly increase its FPS! I guess it's trying to catch up. It's easy to tell with the onscreen text (I turned off anti-aliased text)... when it is first displayed, it jerks and then it flies away quite quickly. Now it feels like it pushes AND pulls me as I play.

I decided on seeing if I could get the Task Manager to show me evidence of another problem. I picked Mem Delta to see if my old idea about garbage collection would show. If I was right, there would be an increase of memory usage until the garbage collector kicks in, and then there would be a drastic decrease in memory usage exactly when I experience stuttering.

Here's me: Using Windows XP, level two in the Old Forest. There seems to be a baseline around 131M ram used. Opening the skills UI window (no stats to spend) adds roughly another 5.5 megs (this is an eyebrow-raise in itself, but I have a gig to spare as is). After repeating opening the menu 10-12 times, the memory useage drops dramatically back to around 13X MB. I can't really tell if it's lagging here. So as I play, I glance over to the task manager when it stutters, and I find that every time I look, the delta is showing in paranthesis- negative changes in memory usage!

I can't tell what makes it spring into action, but that's what I'm betting is the cause of the problem. I have no idea what control lua gives you over the GC, so good luck!
