Is Imbue Item working properly?

#1 Post by Hakko »

I'm a newbie at TOME (though hardly to roguelikes), so maybe this isn't the right place to post this, but it appears as though Imbue Item isn't working properly. Over the course of 21 alchemist levels -- Mummy Lord killed me and my golem in one turn but that's another story -- I accumulated 3 levels of Imbue, but I could never do anything other than enchant body armor. No weapons, no hats, no cloaks, no amulets, no rings, no boots, no gloves, no weapons, no staves, no wands, no potions (!), no scrolls. And the description for the 4th level of Imbue gave no hint that I'd be able to work with any of those, so I never took it. Is that how it should work? If so, it seems an awfully stingy skill tree.

I'm using 12b in OS X.

I'm afraid that's it.

As far as I can tell, the point of imbue is to take your favourite armour (even artifacts) and imbue it with a diamond, which will give you an extra +5 to each stat. I don't think that's entirely worthless.

You can also imbue the armour you give your golem. I haven't played alchemists much, but I liked to find armour of stability and imbue it with quartz, thus giving my golem 100% stun resistance.

Consider if you could imbue every item you can wear: gloves, hat, belt, armour, staff, rings, amulet -- you could conceivably get +40 to all stats! That would be difficult to balance.

I see your point, but there are gems that boost damage, which would seem to make no sense if one can only imbue armor. There are gems that increase light range, which would be great if you could imbue your lantern but worthless for armor.

Not really worthless.

All a lantern is is a non-ego +light radius. In other words, light radius can go on anything (including your armor).

Plus damage doesn't increase the damage of the item, it increases the damage of the character.

I think what Hakko meant was that certain gems are relatively far less useful than +5 to all stats, and so if you were to imbue your Armor Of Nigh Invicibility with +1 light radius instead of +5 all stats, you'd have made a serious blunder. Thus, in order to make those lesser gems useful for something, it would be a decent idea to allow them to be used on other equipment -- +1 light radius on your bright fëanorian lamp, +3 damage on your sword, etc. Disallow all but +light radius on light sources, etc. so that you don't get +5 stats from a brass lantern.

That's it exactly.

I also think that imbue item is a bit limited and frustrating and should be slightly enhanced.

I suggest the following modifications:

At effective level 6, other armors elements (boot, helms and gloves) can be imbued by a level 1 gem.
At effective level 7, any other element (weapons, lite, rings, cloaks, belts, etc) can be imbued by a level 1 gem.

Level 6 spell is limited (globally equivalent to a level 3 gem).
Level 7 spell is powerful, by it requires the investment a category point....

In either case, as these spells require a level > 5, only alchemist can have access to them (and not a character from another class that have successfully escorted an alchemist).
I think it would buff imbue items, while keeping a good balance and avoiding any overpower.
