Giving Staff of Absorption to apprentice mage is hilarious! However, after he dies in pain and suffery, one may still go on giving other things to him, since the dialog doesn't close, and eventually succeed with the quest. However, the idea is awesome, the temptation to give him the staff was overwhelming.
On a related note I don't understand why do the descriptions speak about lost staff after it's given to the the sage.
