Bill died offscreen and now there's two of me.

Gak the skeletal arcane warrior reached Bill's level, and Bill was right by the steps, along with a horde of other monsters. So Gak ducked back upstairs to buy a scroll of teleportation. Returning later, Gak teleported away, landing in an open area. Thinking that was ideal for lobbing Flames at Bill, he waited for Bill to seek him out. And waited. And waited.

Eventually, he went in search of Bill, but there was no one by the stairs. Checking the quest log shows that Bill had, in fact, been vanquished. So he went in search, and discovered ... another Gak!

Another me!

There was a green-bordered @ standing on the edge of the map, a little way south of the stairs. Looking at it showed that it was me. Bill's loot was on the same square. Moving into the @ displaced it, so I could get at the loot. I displaced it a few squares east so I could take a screenshot:

I'm level 6, but the other me is still only level 5..

This Gak is level 5, and I'm level 6. I _think_ I achieved level 6 before I re-entered this level..

No pools of water around.
