Cant Launch Game

#1 Post by Origar »

The game begins to run, mouse and steam icons change and game begins to play but crashes before anything pops up, this is nearly instantaneous.

I have tried every work around listed, Game loads and then crashes when trying to start up. I have 200 hours played from some months back and never had any issues.

I have tried re-downloading and launching the version from the ToME website as a "solution" i can get right up to the "play" button and then again same issue - game wont launch.

I have tried verifying all files, and moving a folder, as well as the various start up options,

here is my paste bin: https://pastebin.com/x7U7YsF2

Please help guys! Love this game and would really love to find out why im unable to play..

Comparing your log to mine. ToME is failing on the first call that involves graphics.

So, its got something to do w/ your graphics drivers.

Googling
"opengl Failed with error 87: The parameter is incorrect"

gives this top page

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... f89cb57cca

I only skimmed it but it looks like the standard 'double talk and blame the user' tech support that M$ exemplifies.

Whatever the case may be your going to need to provide more information about your machine.

Did you lend your graphics card to Tannen at some point?

I can definitely confirm that its something to do with my graphics card.

For anyone following:

I made sure to properly update my windows 10, and installed "Radeon Driver Software" to auto update my drivers. I am now at a point where I can launch the game, but only in "--safemode" If i remove this i start to get a "LoadLibrary Failed with ***error 126***: The parameter is incorrect."

Whats also weird is that through this process I have now rendered "Starbound" unable to play, and its giving me an error message that I've never seen before when it worked literally 30 minutes prior"

When i check out both games directly through the "Radeon Software" it shows both as playable and system requirements met.

It seems that im having some sort of conflicting going on between my video cards - if someone more tech oriented knows more or i can elaborate further would be a lot of help.

I have never lent my graphics card to Tannen, and am not even sure what this question means lol.

I am able to provide any other required details!!

Would love to figure out why now these (two ) games aren't working

Two suggestions

1: You can always roll back to earlier drivers. That you could run Starbound before, and now cannot suggests that the latest version has issues.

2: I notice that you said "video cards". Do you have more than one? Perhaps you have an integrated graphics card and a dedicated one? If you can specify which one is being used, you might discover that it works fine on one, but not the other.

Sorry about the little Tannen joke, its an in-game reference.

I read some of the articles about this problem and looked through the ToME code.
It looks like its SDL throwing the error.

I searched on "SDL, Failed with error 87: The parameter is incorrect"

and found this article
which gives you a full list of things to try.

But after a bit more reading, I found this one
which narrows things down. It's recc. is also in the first article as well. I'd try this first and then if that doesn't do it work through the first list.

Just to be 'complete'

This article
has a very baroque RegEdit command at the very bottom, which will let you look at the exact values in question in regedit. That might be very helpful to use if you feel confident w/ regedit. This will give you a look at what values are in place before you start changing things, but it probably only marginally useful information.

Hope this helps, we're getting a little out of my depth but I hate to see someone left dangling.

I appreciate the replies, i consider myself "tech savvy" for a non-tech person and these issues rapidly escalated out of my ball park as can been evidenced by the joke flying well above my head.. lol

I have an integrated video card (Intel HD Graphics 530) and a dedicated one (Radeon (TM) RX470 Graphics).

To be clear:

TOME now works, initially this was only if i left "--safemode" on,

However once I was at the main menu I was able to disable all shaders and run the game without safe mode.

I have attached the Starbound error message in hopes that it can somehow help provide more info as to what's going on here - as i mentioned, it only stopped working when I began messing around with my drivers.

Any further troubleshooting for the Starbound issue will be done elsewhere!

There are replies from late 2020 reporting this as a fix for this specific error code. The fix is not going to hurt your rig. You rename a system file with the '.bak' suffix which forces the system to take care of it. If there is any problem, you can just put it back. This fix is recc. in each of the other links I've posted.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0lqBQbPVoo

If this is the problem, it will probably fix both games at the same time. Both of them use SDL/OpenGL w/ shaders.

Good luck and do let us know if it works out or not.

That file is currently renamed with .bak - perhaps this is what allowed ToMe to run.

Game runs but seems to be VERY slow compared to what the FPS used to be when I played, tried changing all settings within the game and nothing made an improvement.

At this point even though the game is running, the performance is so poor it makes me not want to play. :( Really hope I can get this figured out, once again appreciate all your help!

Attaching more screenshots in hopes that someone will see something useful... from everything I can see the game(s) should both run fine..

LAST POST PROBLEM FIXED:

After seeing my Radeon software tell me that no OpenGL support was available (when really it IS) ((Please see first screenshot in above comment))

I found a thread that suggested double checking the wires going from my monitor to the back of my PC, it turns out that at some point the wires - got literally crossed - and both cables were going from my monitor to my built-in video card. Once I moved the DVI cable at the back of the pc to run directly into the radeon vid card - problem solved.

Obviously its gonna be hard for the PC to use the Radeon Card for the Default if i haven't even got the darn thing plugged in.... lol

Thanks @smithfield for the help troubleshooting

LOL

Well that explains why it wasn't switching to the correct graphics card to run things.
