Talent & Buff Icons Blank

This morning I tried to Alt+Tab out of the fullscreen game on the main menu. Trying to open it again afterward lead to only the ToME cursor appearing, so I had to close it by Task Manager. No big deal. However, after starting it back up again, I have become unable to see any of the icons in the hotbar or the status effects. The squares that should contain these icons do appear, and I can sort of get by using the tooltips, but it's inconvenient. I had Steam delete local game files and then reinstall, hoping that would fix it. No change.

Possibly relevant details: Windows Vista, latest version of ToME through Steam. It's entirely possible this is less a problem with the game than my failing old laptop.
