The Castle vault causes significant lag

#1 Post by Dracos »

Not quite sure what about it does, but definitely it's really obvious that everything starts going much slower when the castle vault is on the map, even before it gets opened and even after a good deal of the enemies are wiped out. Currently wandering it on Eruan and I can really see the every motion compared to blitzing along in Vor Armory and Vor Pride (which both have pretty solid enemy densities but didn't chug.

It seems to cap one CPU (which I think is all ToME is set up to use) when any action is taking place. Not sure if the amount of junk on the floor is causing a degenerate situation with the path finding or the number of enemies are, but it is really unpleasant encountering that vault since it goes for the entire map.

It does also have some weird see through walls, things not being 'in vault' when still completely behind a wall from you. I tried to use Earth's eye to get more of an idea but the wall seemed to block that for the rest of the enemies stuck radius 2 from me (with a solid wall between us), despite some of them showing without me actually triggering any search powers.

are tiles and items even considered for path finding before they are accessible? the castle has loads of doors and and even some diggable walls. The mentioned Vor armory is also no worse in term of loot, so surely that's unlikely to be the cause, right?

are you sure you don't have a dragon telepathy?

edit is also an option

I do, forgot that.

Even so, then dragon telepathy is working super inconsistently through the castle. The vast majority of little hideaways are groups of 5-8 dragons stuffed tile by tile, and it was generally showing me just two. I guess it was showing the ones visible by telepathy through a diggable wall. That threw me off generally since I was seeing 1-2 of a group I knew was there (because they are there every time the vault spawns).

Lag noticeably clears up pretty considerably once most of it (80 percent or so) is clear, but since I'm grabbing items and killing enemies at the same time, its hard to say which causes the entire map to descend into a frustrating stallfest.

I have no idea if items are, since I haven't read over that code, but the basic complaint is: It shouldn't suck to encounter the castle from a game performance standpoint :(.
