Someone already mentioned Acid Splash—I've discovered the same thing with Doomed talents. I ended up clearing a couple of the Gianttown vaults in Daikara using Hateful Whisper (and Devour Life to recharge) through the vault wall without even opening the door.
Shadows can reveal the location of enemies, but with the vault it was simply a matter of clicking on a square within range and seeing if the spell triggered. If not, try another square.
