Toggle Creature Display does nothing

I play with the classic interface and I use ASCII with graphical backgrounds. Toggling the talent/creature display does nothing (still displays talents), I would love to have some way to see a list of all the creatures on the screen, I have died a number of times (carelessly) because I didn't realize there was a unique hiding with the trash.
