[b42]random rare skeleton spawning in subject Z room

not sure what really happened but after clearing most of the deepest halfling ruins lvl and finally opening door to subject Z room i noticed there was only subject z standing in his usual place, after killing him i found rare skeleton standing few squares away, no yeek, i suspect the rare skeleton killed yeek before i could even get to the door, are rare monster supposed to sapwn in subject z room?
