Lets see there is the # sign and my guess is that there is more as well
this applies to both the chat log and the lost merchant.
The lost merchant one is more game breaking (it makes the artifact unusable) and I suspect (but haven't verified) that it could be abused as well.

I think the problem is if you choose an artifact name with a # (eg) in it.
