Tome completely wrecks my computer.

#1 Post by Lucent »

Howdy, despite just registering and posting now i've actually been around for some time, but never had anything 'new' to post in this section so therefore I hadn't previously bothered.

I am far from computer illiterate (network engineer) so I've been trying to do various things to get around this or at least narrow down the problem on my end but have pretty much met all attempts with failure thus far.

Despite tome 4 requiring a far beefier system than any other roguelike to date, my computer is still plenty of overkill (6 cpu @ 3.81ghz, 8gb ram, 2 powerful video cards in a crossfire setup.. though i have been playing with crossfire disabled lately as most of the games i've played lately aren't programmed for it)

I got the urge to play again after a while of not playing and got myself the latest and greatest on the list, b36. Played a rogue and unlocked the archmage that I never got to try before, and with some trial and error got through the nasty optional void start and got lots of xp and the void star. It was more error than trial. Error on the computer and/or games part (though that area does kind of suck at level 1, its a good challenge).

I am constantly getting a freeze when I play. The screen doesn't go blank, it still displays the game but the entire system is locked up and can not be accessed. I simply have to reboot.

I have been trying many different things with my system setup and game setup to try to narrow the problem down on my end but have only met with failure so far, so I am posting the problem as is.

As far as posting files, i probably can but its a pain in the butt because my internet now is wireless via a neighbor.. on my ps3, and its slow. Good for email and such, but cant connect with my desktop.

the STDerr.txt file refers to the following single problem

" PANIC: unprotected error in call to Lua API ( Unable to initialize: attempt to call a string value)

I am running windows 7 x64 ultimate edition fully updated and legitimate.

I just tried disabling my second monitor in case that was affecting it, and reran the game. Upon loading it gave a resolution message about changing res (i hadn't but I assume it was due to the other monitor going away) and i minimized the game to check something..a couple seconds after minimizing it, as I went to click on the right side of my start bar to open a background program... freeze. again.

I am going to try a couple more things.. running windowed instead of fullscreen, loading the program through sandboxie, turning off more graphic options etc. we'll see.

Not sure what I can do about this.

Would you mind trying to run it with the GNU debugger? Here are the instructions: http://te4.org/wiki/tome4-running-tome-gdb
<DarkGod> lets say it's intended

looks like same problem ive got and why i cant play recent TOME betas (sometimes i can play for 5 min, sometimes 10 min, etc) as far as ive noticed the problem isnt game freezing (game still runs you can save, quit, etc) thing is display is not updating, also GNU debugger hangs when it happens, and you cant SIGBRK program, its problem that happens only in TOME so i dont think its driver/card issue,

I have the exact same issue, complete freeze, requires a hard reset. Cannot play longer than 10 minutes or so.

I am also running Windows 7 64bit, AMD6970, 8GB, I5 2500k @ 4.8Ghz. Maybe its an issue with AMD graphics cards on windows 7?

Got the same thing in my stderror: PANIC: unprotected error in call to Lua API (Unable to initialize: attempt to call a string value)

Hopefully this can be resolved as I'd love to play Tome, even if its just to plunder ideas for my own Roguelike I am working on!
