[TE4 Beta31] Music/sound issues

#1 Post by comatoseDreamer »

Well, first off, I want to say I love this game. It is so far my favorite of rougelikes and I have been playing since T.o.M.E. 2x era. I stopped playing for a long time and just picked up "Slime of Death" (awesome names BTW)

I have really only one issue.

My copy seems to be as temperamental as my girlfriend. Works whenever it wants to. When I first installed and ran the version WITH music, it played fine. Infact, I was happily surprised to be greeted with it!

Now, whenever I reload the game, music and sound fail to play.

Here's what I did:

1) Downloaded t-engine4-windows-1.0.0beta31.zip
2) extracted the files, keeping the folder structure and renamed the folder to TOME.
3) Moved it to "C:\Games"
4) Pinned the EXE to my taskbar.

Now, I have run the game directly from the executable in the TOME directory, ran it from a shortcut placed on the desktop and from taskbar. There does not seem to be a clear way to reproduce what DOES cause the music and sound to play.

I have removed the folder "T-Engine" in my User directory and extracted files and did it all over again. This does not resolve the issue.

I am not sure what info is needed, but i can say right now that I am on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, IDT HD audio chipset with drivers fully updated, AMD Athlon II dual-core M300 (yeah...crappy laptop)... If there is anything else needed, I'll be happy to produce logs or if there is some hidden 'debug' mode that prints to a text file, I can do that too.

I have not run into any issues with other software on my computer so far. I have checked everything here and I either missed posts where others have the same issue or no one else seems to.

I want to try and be as active as possible to help me understand a bit about programming myself since that is the direction I wish to go in.

You didn't accidentally shut the music off in the options did you?

No, I didn't ;-)

bombing the user folder would have reset that also, unless there are some hidden registry writes I'm not aware of :o

I played around some more, and it seems I was wrong in one of my 'troubleshooting' steps. When running the executable directly in the folder, sound works every time I start and end the game...

So... I think I need to check how the shortcut is setup in the taskbar. Any ideas? Or is this going to be expected behavior? :?

I am clutching at straws here, but in the shortcut is there a "Start in" part?

That should point to wherever the game is now.

Also, lemme get this straight... You now have a folder named C:\games\tome\?

That folder contains files like t-engine.exe, te4log.txt some .dlls and some folders?

Check that you have c:\games\tome\game\modules\tome\data\music\ ... is there about 71mb worth of .ogg files?

Next check that you have a single file in c:\games\tome\game\engines\default\modules\boot\data\music\

Lastly find your t-engine folder in your "home drive" not sure what its called on win7 but it's something like c:\users\<yourloginname>\T-Engine\settings

Check that there is a file called audio.cfg. If it's there, you can (maybe) delete it... or rename it (thus getting you the default settings which is sound on). Alternatively, create a file called audio.cfg looking like this:

Code: Select all

audio.music_volume = 50
audio.effects_volume = 90
audio.enable = true
I *all* of this is in order... then I suggest the old windows advice...reboot... if it THEN doesn't work... maybe vist us on IRC? For realtime help?

It's all there, and I wish my posts could show up a little faster so i can make amends and edits when i find them.

The issue seems to come from using the shortcut on Windows 7 taskbar. Every time I start tome by using the executable in the directory directly, it runs without issue. Music and Sound are fine.

Here is one thing that is interesting, and I'm beginning to think it's Windows 7:

Right click the executable and choose 'Pin to taskbar'
Click on icon and game starts, sound and music.
Exit TOME
Click on it again.
No Sound and music.
Exit
Right click icon on taskbar, select properties, advanced, place a check next to run as administrator. Click OK.
click on icon, TOME starts, music and sound are fine.
Exit.
click on taskbar icon again and music and sound are not working.
Remove the 'run as administrator' option turned on earlier.
TOME starts with music and sound.
exit.
Start TOME again and sound and music work fine.

Under properties:
Target field: C:\Games\TOME\t-engine.exe
Start in field C:\Games\TOME

Nothing much else to edit unless I want to start playing around with the compatibility.

A shortcut placed on the desktop (right clicking the executable > send to > Desktop (create shortcut)) Works fine. It starts with sound and music always...so...

Something about starting TOME from Windows 7 (probably count Vista in this also) taskbar is causing weird behavior... for me at least. No one else on the forum seems to have the problem.

I have no issue with playing without sound and music. I'm used to the silent ASCII games ;-) It's just one of those Nice Things I like to have from time to time.

If an IRC session might help, I would do it. I am beginning to think it's just me unless you guys who have already responded to my posts are running Windows 7 and find no issue starting TOME from the taskbar.

I've got the same problem actually - Win7, sound sometimes doesn't play. I thought maybe it was a problem with my earphone set up or drivers.

Sound is broken on mine as well (x64 win7) and very rarely the sounds work, for no apparent reason, and then don't work the next time I launch Tome.
