Digging problem

ye olde dumb question:

Why am I getting all my dig attempts auto-cancelled (no matter where I am or what type of digger I have equipped)?
I always get this:
"Digging stopped after 0 turns: you have dismantled a trap"

There were no traps on any of the maps I tried to dig. The wall was 'diggable' and I tried it like 30 times in 5 different maps before I gave up trying.

Any hints?
