Dumb question: Unbeatable because of my equipment or build?

#1 Post by daidalus »

Hi all

I am fairly new to TOME4, i started playing it around 2.5 weeks ago. I have won about 4 times on normal so i wanted to make a try on nightmare. i had 2 stupid deaths but reached dreadfell lvl8 with my lvl25 berserker. I lost all 4 remaining lifes over there. I have attached a screenshot of what happened. Keep in mind that all the enemies where pretty near the stairs when first entered the level. I am standing at the stairs at the photo as i was trying to go up and down in case i could finish even 1 of the enemies (with no success)

So my question is, is it my build? My equipment? Or my inexperience in general. I really want to know what i could have done.

Here is a link to the char: https://te4.org/characters/199887/tome/ ... 6f268d79c5

Thanks for the replies (if any)

IMHO, this is a perfect reason for a teleport rune instead of your slower movement infusion. Surely, these can teleport you out of the pot into the frying pan, but perhaps not. And in your case, you could not turn up much worse anyway.

Other means of instant teleportation exist (torque of psychoportation, for instance), but these are quite rare compared to the rune.

A dreadmaster found you. Use perfect strike or gear with accuracy and blind fighting or level 5 arcane eye. If you can't see it, right click where you think it is and inspect.

If you can freeze it and immediately run away, then maybe you can escape.

It's kinda unusual to see that many dreads at once. In any case, you were kinda helpless against them due to your low accuracy. You would have a less than 1 in 4 chance of hitting the dread you have the cursor over based on your defense. 2 points in combat accuracy isn't enough on a weapon using character that isn't maxing dex.

Definitely need perfect strike (a good 1 pointer but is a great investment at 3 or even 5 points) vs dreadmasters/invis/high def so that's your mistake, equipment with blind fight helps too, make sure to kill the dreadmaster first if it's in range.
If you really need a teleport use psychoport, blindside would've gotten you out of there too if you used it on one of the enemies on the edges, since you have that.

Notice I said Perfect Strike and not Precise Strikes, two different things so don't mix them up :)

I think the biggest problem is that you lost 2 lives here, and didn't then go somewhere else instead.

Retrying after one death is good practice, so you can try a different tactic or see if you were unlucky. But after the second death, go elsewhere and come back when you have made adjustments to your talents and/or equipment.
Especially when you are up against an enemy that can keep summoning more friends.

Sometimes escaping and coming back is a good idea. I know I've had to do that a number of times.

Unless it's the only area available, then you're in trouble, but at least you can recuperate and strategize without getting overwhelmed :P

Thank you all, that was good advice.

Indeed my accuracy was low, it was my fault. On normal i had no issues with invisible enemies so i thought i was ok. Yes there was a dreadmaster in there but i am not familiar with this one and i didn't know he is a special one. I didn't use perfect strike on normal at all and i thought it was useless. Good to know now though, lesson learned...

I didn't had anywhere else to go really, only graveyard and spellblaze, that's why i stayed.

Unfortunately i had no Torque of psychoportation drop or in a shop, although i was searching for one. I tend to prefer movement compared to teleport.

You should pretty much never use teleport as a rune unless undead because it's unreliable and it doesn't give you the valuable turns of stun immunity that movement does.
