Actually which pieces mean under such vague definition?

Robes, light armors, heavy armors or massive armors.

There are a few gems that can make good gear even better. High level gems can give 50% stun resistance, for instance. Artifact gems can be even better, giving huge boosts (though obviously it's hard to choose what gem to use for what armor). Basically, by the time you've put 5 points into it the gems you're finding may seem a lot more worth it.
