WTF is Aether bolt???

So I started an undead Reaver, he is an amazing character. Found a tier 5 1 handed rare mace at at level 12 so as you can expect he's been cruising through the game, the tier 1 and 2 dungeons. Was fighting rogue adventurers in ambushes.

One of them turns into Shivogoroth form or however you spell that. I focused on killing the other villains as he approached. Suddenly a purple-ish line flashes across the screen and my 500 hps are gone. I check the game log. Apparently the spell hits 6 times in a single turn and does 80 damage per hit. And has like a 2 turn cooldown.

Are you ****ing kidding me? That is OP as ****! What class can I make that can cast this spell?

for clarity: Aether Beam. a rather fun spell. that can potentially silence and blow yourself to bits if you arent careful.

The class is Archmage, the build you're looking for is Aether Mage.
The trick with Aether beam is that it's both stationary and knows no friends or foes. So it may turn up awry for the caster.
You can spot it by the strange purple/orange pumpkin that appears at the center of the effect.

The reason I don't play arcane mages. Misclicked this spell and killed myself.

So what is the counter play for this? When I'm against a foe who uses it what's the first thing I should do?

I had a silence ability but had used it on another foe first. Then when I died and came back this guy killed me in 2 rounds before I even had a chance.

against mageys? kill them before they can? other than that, get outta the area. each tick doesnt do tremendous damage, but it spins rather quickly, so you get hit by it alot.

The trick is to not stand in the danger zone.

Ah that's what I should have done. Teleported away, put on the torque and run around behind trees out of range to let it cooldown, then activate it and engage

if you have one, then yea... each 'hit' doesnt do tons of damage, it just hits alot. other than arcane vortex, prob one of my fav arcane spells

It's a bit tedious but I check talents on rares. If I saw aether beam I'd probably just run. I *think* the spell deals less damage in the middle. The ai probably targets you directly. So staying still might be a counter.

Sorry that's vague I know. Like I said upthread I gave up on arcane builds after my first accidental suicide to aether beam.

The center hits once per turn and doesn't silence. (It's that so that you yourself can stand on it ).
So yes, it's the safest place.

The best move as a reaver would probably be to Bone Grab the caster into his own beam.

That aside, if you watch the animation you can see where the beam was and which way it is spinning and you should be able to move out of it without taking additional damage.
