Best class to unlock Necromancers?
Just died to a Fearscape vampire on my Corruptor(Knocked my Flame off sustain so the fire killed me. :/ ) literally like 10 feet from the Necromancer boss fight, and getting kinda frustrated.
Is there any class that particularly has an easier time with the Graveyard? I just wanna unlock Necros so I can start racking up cold damage for my ice tree. ;~;
Edit: Iunno, I guess I'm just frustrated that I got so close, then got wrecked. Probably isn't a strict "best" or anything.

Oozemancer's a good one, as is antimagic Solipsist. Really, any class that's good at dealing with magic damage, preferably with some mobility so you can position yourself well to deal with the coffinspawn.
Unless you get a lich in one of the coffins, then the best class to deal with it is Crying.

Unfortunately, I don't have either of those classes. ;~;FruitAndGarbage wrote:Oozemancer's a good one, as is antimagic Solipsist. Really, any class that's good at dealing with magic damage, preferably with some mobility so you can position yourself well to deal with the coffinspawn.

I know the basics of unlocking Solipsists, I'm just not sure when the Dogoth Caldera place opens, and Oozemancer...isn't that like a lvl.30+ area that doesn't always appear?

Nah, a lvl.26(I was 15 at the time. Probably rushed it too much.) elite vampire lord or whatever took me out.

Re: Best class to unlock Necromancers?
Really, unlocking Necromancer's isn't about 'what class is best suited to killing Celia'; it's about what race/class combination you can get the farthest in the game with.
I would advise thinking less about what might be the most effective against Celia, and what for you is the most effect combination that you can get through the game with. The Easiest way to kill Celia is to simply go into the Catacombs early to set her level, then proceed to outlevel her and come back much later.

Mmm. Try summoner then, they're pretty impressively overpowered. You also probably want to get the quest from Ungrol as soon as you're out of your starter dungeon, go into the crypt (not just the graveyard, but the crypt proper), and immediately leave; this'll lock the dungeon's level at its lowest possible base level (15 for the crypt I think), which will make the fights a lot easier when you come back leveled up.
Unless the creatures in the coffins are generated on opening instead of on loading, but I don't think that's the case.
Really, though, any antimagic will make your job a lot easier.

Re: Best class to unlock Necromancers?
I considered doing that, yeah, but the problem is that, once you reach the boss to set their level, all the coffins spawn, leading to a cluster**** on return. Might not be so bad if you outlevel it a ton, though.Davion Fuxa wrote:Really, unlocking Necromancer's isn't about 'what class is best suited to killing Celia'; it's about what race/class combination you can get the farthest in the game with.

Kinda wish ToME had more variety in casters...well, at least in ones that aren't locked behind super-boring classes(*coughTWs*). All I have for casting is Archmages and Corruptors, and getting sorta tired of them. Well, those two, and whatever the heck Reavers and Mindslayers are. Honestly haven't tried either yet. >.>;
I've actually been meaning to try Summoner, but the summon=cunning cap turned me off it. Maybe I'll do some research there.FruitAndGarbage wrote:Mmm. Just to make sure - you do know that you don't have to go after Celia, you can go after her minions first which leads to you killing all her minions 1 by 1 before meeting her?

Re: Best class to unlock Necromancers?
Yeah, I know, but if you're doing the method where you go in and recall, just seeing her is enough to call out the minions, I hear, and not sure if levels are set by entering an area, or seeing the enemy in question(Like, trying to set Subject Z lower as a Yeek didn't work. Recalled out before seeing him, and when I finally came back he was like level 19 or so).Davion Fuxa wrote:Just to make sure - you do know that you don't have to go after Celia, you can go after her minions first which leads to you killing all her minions 1 by 1 before meeting her?
I'm just not sure how it works, I guess.
Re: Best class to unlock Necromancers?
Pretty sure that locking Celia's level doesn't affect coffin spawns.
My advice though for Celia would be to go straight at her. She's less dangerous than pretty much anything those coffins produce. You should have enough time to deal with her before the coffin inhabitants reach you, and if I understood correctly the point is to kill Celia to unlock necromancer, not survive the whole encounter.

Pretty much, yeah. I'll try thinking more suicidally about it this time, if that makes any sense. x3Faeryan wrote:Pretty sure that locking Celia's level doesn't affect coffin spawns.

Re: Best class to unlock Necromancers?
Figured I would look this up and dump it in here: Let's Play ToME Steam Edition - Higher Anorithil - Episode 25
Start of the video features the battles with all of Celia's Minions 1 by 1 and then the battle with Celia herself. Her Minions spawn relative to your level upon disturbing their coffins or Celia. Celia though you can lock her level in and then proceed to leave the dungeon and come back to finish her off whenever you feel strong enough to do so.
Note I disagree about Celia being less dangerous then her coffin minion spawns; at least she has an advantage if she is in open terrain being a Necromancer and she does have Runes - of which you might find Phase Door or Teleport. You might get lucky but I've found it far easier to have full access to the terrain to kill her.
Edit:
I'll note if you are interested in looking at other videos I have fighting Celia, I recommend looking for my videos on my YouTube Channel featuring the Yeek Archmage Episode 10, 11, and 12 where I unlock the class for the first time myself.
I also kill Celia with my Winning Shaloran Berserker run - killed Celia's minions in Episode 8, killed Celia in Episode 21 of that run. That was my easiest run killing Celia, but probably a bit overblown in what you have to do.

Re: Best class to unlock Necromancers?
You don't have to see Celia to lock her level.
Just entering the first zone is enough to fix the level scaling for the entire zone.

Re: Best class to unlock Necromancers?
You know, honestly, I rock the cemetery after completing all of the T1 and T2 dungeons (include the Lake). And sometimes a couple of the optional dungeons too. I don't usually try it out until I hit level 20-25... Maybe that'll help you out.
And it was such a good idea...
Re: Best class to unlock Necromancers?
Just entering her zone locks her level. As soon as I hit Last Hope (level 12 or so) I go down in the crypt, read the letter and leave. That spawns her.
Then, once I have completed the *entire* West, including Dreadfell, I go back and kill all the coffins first, then kill Celia.
If you do this, it doesn't matter what class you play, she will be easy.
On that note, easiest classes would be:
Summoner: Stand in door, fill room with drakes, walk in and pick up loot
Mage (wildfire): Stand in door, fill room with fire, walk in and pick up loot
Oozemancer: Stand in door, fill room with slime, walk in and pick up loot.
Hope this helps. I found getting all the lore the hardest part. Remember that you can get the pieces over multiple games, and then read them all in your library in the Sher-Tul fortress to get the "read all lore" part completed.

Ran into a tough group(Elite master vampire, a vampire, a skeleton and a zombie), but managed to win and get Necromancers at last. x3
