EDIT: Having looked some more, I rather think this may be a bug. I have been round the level a few times and I can not find the shade anywhere.
There's a chance he killed himself with traps, I guess. I think someone here reported that would not trigger completion of the quest log.

You could try to find his drops. It's pretty obvious by the name of one of his drops that it was his.

There were no drops of his. I think he may have gotten somehow buggily caught in the phase door. At least that's my guess.

Q: An archer can wield a melee weapon and bump into things, but can a fighter throw or shoot a missile weapon? Do they have any option for ranged combat? "Shoot" doesn't show up as an option below the map.

It seems sometimes the bottom level generates with his special room (it's funny shaped and at the very bottom of the map) disconnected from the rest of the level. I believe this is a known bug.

This video shows how to get to it you you have enough phase door scrolls or the spell.

Next beta the zone ensures that when it makes a level it is always connected using an A* pathfind :)

His special area of the level was connected this time. I did meet him. He hit me for over a hundred, so I phase doored out. When I came back he was neither there nor elsewhere.

I believe he only gets generated the first time you go to the level.

But yeah, he does waaaay too much damage.

When you get the prompt for the assassins quest at friggin' character level 1-2 and you decline it, can it reappear later, like, when you wouldn't DIE if you said yes?

I don't think so. It's never reappeared for me.

A couple of possibly spoilish answers to earlier questions:

There is one kind of ego light that gives partial blindness resistance. This is REALLY useful in the sandworm lair since a monster breathes hard and blinds you there. Even if I find the Phial I keep one of these as a swap if I find one.

Even more spoily? To answer an early question about having a 'home' like in Angband, you can't have one of the same kind, but if you leave items on the ground in Bree (at least) they remain there. [I learned this by chucking lousy ammo I created on the floor. I was shocked  to see it was there when I came back later....]

In the game's current form of beta10b, is the game able to be completely beaten? As in, are all quests available able to be finished and the final mob(s?) able to be vanquished? Is there a "Congradulations!" screen of some kind?

yes the game is beatable (if you got the second version of 10b) and there are multiple win screens too, as well as multiple ways to win.
