Is there any way to be "exposed to the void of space" other than starting as an archmage?

Fearscape portals found in the East will do it.

I think you could also be "exposed to the void of space" by starting as any race and/or class combination from Ashes (Doomelf, Doombringer and/or Demonologist).

Having a corruptor cast Fearscape (from shadowflame talent tree) on you , do expose you to the "void of space"
The most sure way to get it is to confront the Grand corruptor in "mark of the spellblaze"
I know, since I often want to get the Aether permeation prodigy... and so I plan to go get the Grand corruptor before level 25 (and let him survive until he cast Fearscape on me)
