Dev mode question

It says if I start up Dev mode, it'll invalidate any save files. Like... delete them all? I want to try my hand as designing a class, but don't want to lose all my characters!

It will invalidate any save file you load. Invalidate means that they no longer update on the server, so it won't register new achievements, wins, etc. If you turn on debug mode and don't load any existing save files, they should still be valid when you turn it off again. If I remember correctly, the game even warns you when you're about to invalidate a save.
