Trying to download free version and play... help plz.

#1 Post by SoFrustrated »

So apparently I must be r**arded or something. I have downloaded the archive of the free version on my Ubuntu 14.04 install, and have absolutely no idea what to do with it. At all. No instructions I can find online anywhere that even give me a heading to go off of to get started either. Really want to get into the game, but as it stands ... no hope aside from paying Canonical $8 or getting the game off steam for a bit less than that.

Unpack it and run the "t-engine" executable within. It's stand-alone.

Apparently it does not run out of the box on Ubuntu due to lack of libudev0. See this thread: http://forums.te4.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=43483

TL;DR:

Dark god recommends removing lib64/libcef.so
Also reported to work is to use the GetDeb PPA: http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/ppa/getdeb ... ist=trusty -- follow the instructions in the gray box, run your package manager, update your packages and install tales-of-majeyal package.

Since removing libcef.so is reported to work, that is my recommendation, unless you trust GetDeb (I don't really know anything about them, other than I know some people who use the PPA).

Some instructions for downloading the the game and getting it to run on Ubuntu (untested by me since I run Arch):

Download the file from http://te4.org/download This will result in receiving a file with a name like t-engine4-linux64-1.2.5.tar.bz2. The file will be put in the Downloads directory in your home directory. Using your file browser, you can click on this file and a file extraction utility will run. I have never, ever used this utility so I don't know how it works, but probably you can figure it out. You want to extract all the files into a directory somewhere. After that, use your file browser to go to that directory. There will be many files and directories in there. Among them will be a directory called "lib64". Go inside that directory and delete the file called "libcef.so".

After you have done this, whenever you want to play the game, go into the directory where you extracted it and double click on the t-engine file.

Note: darkgod has said that deleting libcef.so removes the in-game web browser. This means that you won't be able to install addons, etc inside the game. But you can install them using the command line. I leave discovering how to do this as an exercise to the reader ;-)

Thank you for the reply. I did eventually manage to figure out a work around for my problem. Pretty sure I did something which could possibly break a completely different application though. *shrug*

Have been having loads of fun so far. :D

Chose a Cornac Bulwark initially. The first died right quick( first floor of Kor'Pul to a rare spiderkin that just stomped it), but the second has made it to level 21 and counting. Have that on hold for the moment, as I am unsure if I can beat what lies ahead, in favor of a Cornac(again) Summoner who is doing fairly well so far imo.

Game is definitely addicting for me to say the least, and provides quite a different play experience compared to DC:SS which is the roguelike I have the most experience with.

Summoner is pretty strong if you jive with the playstyle. Bulwark is fine and can be nice for starting, sometimes people wind up feeling the damage get too low later on for it lack of ability to deal with magic stuff (unless you go Antimagic which has its own problems).

I find skirmishers a pretty beginner friendly class that is also strong all the way through and on higher difficulties too although the way to unlock is not exactly obvious to beginners.

The new Sun Paladin is also very good starting class, but you gotta get to east for that. So I guess it isn't (unless you edit the unlock file, which I have done before) :P

On that Bulwark I managed to pick up 1.6 worth of mind sear which gives me a bit of ranged offensive capability. But going up against several casters simultaneously is asking for a butt whooping for him as I found after I tried peaking my head into the Mark of The Spellblaze zone. 3 Elven casters showed at the same time, not sure what all they threw but I managed to survive 3 turns. Maybe more? Seemed like on of them paralyzed me or something for several turns where stuff flew across the screen as I sat and watched my guy die helplessly. Had the Eidolon toss me back to the world map after that fiasco.

Summoner is definitely pretty cool. So super squishy that I have to be extremely cautious of anything with a ranged attack though especially if it is a penetrating sort of attack like the mind sear I love so much on my Bulwark for killing all the stuff down a hall, but I am lovign how absolutely different a play experience it is. Currently thinking that the character will not survive the fight with the tempest mage dude on that mountain when I get to him though all it would take is 2 lightning bolts and he'd be toast.
