summertide phial: useless or worth it?

#1 Post by angstymeierlink »

I'm not a light character (but not dark), and its stats seem fairly low for the amount of gold its worth in a shop. Am I missing something here? Its light radius sucks and its light ability seems useless as well, tried it in a cave and it did nothing everytime. I don't want to hock it before asking here just in case I'm missing something awesome about it

The light ability banishes magical darkness, which is useful against certain monsters/classes. It also comes with a hefty boost to a healing mod.
I tend to keep it around, if not in the slot itself, for the former alone. It doesn't weigh much.

The light radius sucks? What are you expecting for a t1 artifact?

I'm guessing the cave was already lit? The activated light ability has a large radius, and that's absolutely critical if you're a ranged class in an unlit dungeon, like say the Sandworm Lair. Lite radius 4 is also larger than the lite radius 2 you get with most t1 lites, and as mentioned before it banishes magical darkness (you might not have run into that yet, it's a demon thing) and the healing mod is a nice side bonus.

I mean it's not OP or anything but I'd easily rank it in the upper half of all t1 artifacts.

Yeah unless you get lucky with a Bright Alchemist's Lamp or the like, it's a fantastic T1 artifact for how awkward zones like Sandworm Lair are without a good light radius.

exactly. light radius is seriously underrated as a survival strategy, yet player after player dies to an archer they can't see. i don't get that.

i always work hard to get a high light radius. it makes a big difference.

It's really good when you have low lite radius since you can light up a very large radius in a turn. This can help you see ranged enemies attacking you from outside your lite radius. I often use it then immediately attack them which is much faster than guessing their location.

ah I did not realize it was tier 1, it doesn't say in the info. I just got it in a vault in the rakshor pride, hence my wondering if its worth it. Obviously not at my stage of the game. ty

It mysteriously doesn't have a material level, but from its level range, its t1.

Some monsters can cause tiles to be perma-dark, and the Summertide phial is a way (the only?) to reverse that.

If you want to light things up a wand of clairvoyance is probably a better option, but for the t1 stuff it has nice light radius and the heal mod is quite a lot. I think it may be the only thing that dispels duathelden, or how ever that spelled, darkness pretty sure clairvoyance does not, but it lets you see the monsters anyway.

Yeah the lighting things up is not that useful when put in context due to other better things existing, but lighting parts of a dark dungeons (especially on the 6CD of the wand) is quite nice.

Burning star only maps; it doesn't light. You'll be able to see the terrain but not enemies standing there.

Good light radius, good heal mod, huge light element resist. I always use it until I find a much higher tier light, and even then I keep it around just for fighting luminous/radiant horrors. It's a solid item considering it's usually one of the first fixedarts I find in every game.
