What causes the backup guardians to appear?
I just came back from the east and went looking for them, but they don't seem to be there.
Re: What causes the backup guardians to appear?
Hmm, I just found Kor's Fury. I guess you just need to run around a lot. Is Aluin on Trollmire 3 or 4?
Re: What causes the backup guardians to appear?
They are there, but they aren't always in a connected part of the level.
My feedback meter decays into coding. Give me feedback and I make mods.
Re: What causes the backup guardians to appear?
As far as I know, barring some whacky bug, they are always there when you come back from the east.
They are always on a particular level but could be anywhere and do wander. Getting Track, etc helps a lot for find them. I had a real pain the ass finding snaproot last night, OF3 was some special alternate for me where the entire level was a castle vault and my wand of clairvoyance wasn't showing me snaproot.
Check the list on the wiki for the level for each otherwise its really easy to be wandering around too much. I wish they were all just on level 1 like a few of them are

Re: What causes the backup guardians to appear?
You said it. Once you comeback from the East.. the Back-up Guardians appear. As far as I know there is no extra hoops to jump through or events needed to follow. You don't need to listen to the town folk or talk to the 'one' someone and there is no proper order of events to adhere to.
There are a couple where hitting Z ~ Autoexplore = straight beelines to the end zone but won't target any enemy and misses the rest of the map.. Its a PITA but occasionally you need to manually explore. Any kind of Track ( the one that shows enemy position?) works well plus it is fairly common on a lot of items. Equip it just for that and then take it off before u engage.
Not all zones have Guardians, the wiki will tell which do. But yea, they should be there. I am pretty much just repeating the last dude but its good advice. PLUS they should be fairly tame.. some have specific weapon drops but you can skip all of em if you want. The sandlair you will want to get otherwise its just more gear and XP.

Re: What causes the backup guardians to appear?
[raises hand] So... maybe I'm missing something here, but how, then, is an unspoiled player supposed to find out about the backup guardians? The rumors? Experienced roguelike players know better than to trust stuff like that. And even if they did go and check, they'd probably expect it to be like Reknor redux, with the boss monster at the very end of the level --- and from the above, it sounds like that could very easily lead to missing the backup guardian entirely [which would just make the player even less likely to listen to the rumors...].

Re: What causes the backup guardians to appear?
I thought that a few versions ago DG added some random dialogue to the generic townspeople in Last Hope about the backup Guardians. Or maybe it was an addon, or my Solipsism threshold getting too low.
Re: What causes the backup guardians to appear?
When you visit Last Hope after coming back from the East, someone in town will comment about it. It's not an add-on, it's just a regular thing.

Umm... yes, those are the "rumors" I was talking about above [and that others had already mentioned in the thread], and they don't really cut it, for the reasons I've already discussed.TheRani wrote:When you visit Last Hope after coming back from the East, someone in town will comment about it. Re: What causes the backup guardians to appear?
I don't think there are any other townsfolk rumours in the game, untrue or otherwise, and they don't show up until you come back. That seems reasonably unusual for me to not discount it like, say, ADOM fortune cookie messages.
Re: What causes the backup guardians to appear?
I agree with Danton. There is no useless chatter cluttering up ToME for fluff. Anything someone says to you is important one way or another. If someone dosent have anything important to say, they say nothing at all. Keep that in mind.

Re: What causes the backup guardians to appear?
I honestly never noticed the "rumors" being spoken at me until I looked after being spoiled about rumors, which I found after being spoiled about backup guardians.
