The Maze... no way down

#1 Post by death glider »

My Thalore Rogue just completed clearing level 1 of the maze, but there is no staircase down to the next level... I've used 'Z' to auto search, but it keeps returning to the staircase up. The Maze looks like its been affected by strange magic, because its is broken up and there are these large holes in the floor which I've been avoiding... do I need to fall/jump into one to get to the next level? I haven't tried that because i don't want to die yet, but if there isn't a staircase down, then how can I completed this quest? Possible bug not adding staircase... this is version 1.1.5.

You've ran into an alternate Maze layout, that makes it so that there's no staircases at all and more horror type enemies than normal. Also the boss is different.
You guessed right on the traversing of levels; you indeed have to jump down the hole to get to the next level.
There's no stairs up either so if you want to return back to surface you need to hit your Rod of Recall. You can always come back and go down the holes again.
Stronk is a potent combatant with a terrifying appearance.

Thanks for the reply... although before I read it, I decided to take the leap and figured out what I needed to do... it probably doesn't need to be more obvious, I'm overly cautions and I think most would have stumbled into the solution...

as to the outcome... my roguelike character got killed by that horned beast thing at the bottom... :x :(

It happens. Most players don't like the Alternate Maze. Most sane ones, anyway...

And don't worry; caution is your friend in this game. :)

Not sure if I've just been insulted... :?

How so, my friend? Do you, too, enjoy venturing into the chaotic depths of the Maze of Horrors? :)

Insulting isn't my game. If you've been insulted by me, know that it wasn't the intention. :(

Yes I do rather enjoy the alternate maze.
And I am greatly theatrical about these implications about my sanity. :P

Alt Maze is seriously the best.

I use zOmnibus to guarantee Alt Maze.
Check out my addons: Nullpack (classes), Null Tweaks (items & talents), and New Gems fork.

One reason why I don't like alt maze so much currently is that z-ing through doesn't work so well because the auto-explore function wants to path through the holes and doesn't decide to go around when you refuse to go down. If I've confirmed that I don't want to pass through that tile once, then the auto-explore should try to choose a different path. Same thing often happens in the fortress where it tries to hit a portrait on the wall repeatedly when z-ing. No thanks.
