What are the limitations on character names?

#1 Post by Tuidjy »

What are the limitations on character names? Some of my characters do not appear on the website summaries, and I assume this is due to their names being too long. For example "Elvan Shturigashti" (don't ask) does not appear.

Is there a way to rename a character after you have played him for a while?

Name length has nothing to do with being stored on the website. Only validation affects that. Check new characters for a message (On the message log, not the chat log) about 'switchting to offline profile due to XXX'. The most common reason is 'bad addon (addon name here)' which needs to be reported to the addon creators. The second most common is 'due to no online profile active' (which usually means you started the game too fast and hadn't synced with the server yet. To solve the latter, return to the main menu and wait until the box on the left shows up which says 'the most recent version is X.Y.Z' (currently 1.1.5)

Hope this helps. If you were failing to be validated, typically, exiting and reloading the character can fix it, as long as it wasn't an addon problem, and then it should register as normal next time you change zones.

It's none of the things you mentioned.

My online profile is displayed, and the mot-du-jour as well.
The only add-ons are the ones that come with the Steam installation. His save file mouse-over looks exactly like those of every other character I have.
There are no error messages when he exits, loads, or when he changes levels.
If I load and save another character, the web site (here) reflects them, but not him.

It's not the end of the world, but there's definitely something wrong.

It depends on when the character was created.
If the news hadn't loaded when you created the character, it wouldn't be registered online.
That is the only time it will display the warning.

You are saying that once a charcater fails to register, that's it? But I had three characters that were created before I even opened the ports for ToME, and all three registered, and are updating just fine. This one isn't.
