Re: Dumb questions thread
Where do I download Add-ons and Game Modules???
Re: Dumb questions thread
Addons from here:
http://www.te4.org/tome/addons
Game modules generally from individual developers' sites. For instance:
http://www.gruesomegames.com/
(though I'd say Broken Bottle is the only T-Engine game worth checking out there)

Re: Dumb questions thread
thanks, one last question:is there, like, a master list of all the modules? or somewhere that I can at least find lots of them?
Re: Dumb questions thread
I don't think there are a lot of them, yet. You might check the modules subforum in the t-engine stuff, though. It's down a bit from the T4 related subforums.
Re: Dumb questions thread
Having a psychoportation torque is a good replacement for a teleportation rune, right?
Re: Dumb questions thread
I think it's still technically capable of dropping you like two tiles away... but it's considerably unlikely to (to the extent I haven't had it happen yet). Most importantly, it's basically impossible to be disabled, so even if you're stunned and have a list of debuffs two miles long going, you can still activate the torque and get out (teleport amulets work similarly, mind!).
So yeah, it's a pretty good replacement for a tele rune, second only, perhaps, to the amulet of teleportation. If you've got something better to be using than the teleport rune, and nothing you'd rather be using in your tool slot, you can probably pretty safely manage to rely on psychoport. Or just keep the rune and have psychoport as a backup that can't be disabled.

Is there a way to change back to the old way of displaying those talents at the bottom of the page? The cutsie icons may be nice, but I prefer the old text version.
Please tell me I'm just being an idiot and overlooking an option on the menu.

Yes, there is an option. In Game Options, Icons Hotkeys Toolbar is that preference. Set it to disabled for the text display.

Ok, DUMB question!!
Just got onto the website, and I'm seeing all these differently titled betas, all the way through 'Beta 42 aka "Dreaming my dreams" '...are these title signifying dramatically different quests or something? Which do I download? Which do I start with? Is the selection arbitrary for a beginner? Sorry for lame question...

Re: Dumb questions thread
Nope, higher number = newer version = (usually) better. Their titles relate to new gameplay elements or improvements.

Re: Dumb questions thread
You should always download the latest version. The titles usually refer to things that have been added ("Dreaming my dreams," for instance, has a new dreaming-themed psionic class and an extra dreaming-themed zone, among other things).

Re: Dumb questions thread
Alright, A series of hopefully more naive/ignorant then stupid questions... Longtime player of classic Tome returning to the community after about a 5-6 year absence from any form of online contact. Shocked to find the (FAR larger...) new Tome, though I am sad to see the old tolkien references go. Anyways, questions are as follows...
1) Already a new version has been released from the one that I currently have. When upgrading to the new version, how is savefile compatibility? Also, does it keep intact my achivements/unlocks? (Don't care much about the former, but the latter matters a bit more...)
2) How do I go about upgrading to said new version? I don't want to pile up 30 copies of the game on my harddrive the way some roguelikes have... Can it just update existing files or something so I can keep just one tome folder? (This is especially relevant given the larger size (over 100 megs... good-bye dial-up users...) and my small harddrive.)
3) Where in the forums do I ask about general build advice for a character? Since such knowledge would probably involve at least some level of spoilers, general doesn't seem the most appropriate category, but, can't think of where else would be best to ask.
4) Where can I find the last existing version of ToME as it used to be? (The classic Tolkien one.) The last version I have left from before my absence was 2.3.2 for windows. Given that I enjoyed the old story, I'd like to see the last (stable?) version produced. (Not even sure what the last version would have been before this particular transition to Maj'Eyal.)
5) While this will probably be frowned on, is save-scumming still possible for the purposes of testing character builds without several hundred restarts? (Yes, yes, I know, savescumming is evil, but especially given the absence of a wizard-mode (which I always hated anyway) it seems the best way to really see how the build would hold up over time, without blowing 6 months trying to run it far enough to accept it's limitations and drop it all.)
6) While I may very well have missed something, being new to the game, is there any way to grind up extra experience/items/cash/etc. if I believe I'm not ready for the next dungeon in sequence? Returning to the first dungeon I played in after clearing two others showed no enemies re-appearing in it, are all dungeons going to be like this, thus limiting experience/cash/items to a finite amount?
7) Do I need to worry about all the friendlies that are dying as a summoner? Is there any sort of penalty attached to using your summons in a sacrificial manner? And exactly how does equilibrium work? I don't seem to notice any difference even after it's climbed from several summons...
That should probably do for the moment...

Re: Dumb questions thread
1) saves are lost, achievments/unlocks are kept upon upgrading.
2) just overwrite everything in tome folder. if you wish, you can manually get from the svn only the things that were changed since previous version by diff.
3) there's "spoilers" section
4) no idea here, sorry
5) in the latest version some kind of save-checking was added. not sure about details though. savescamming is evil indeed.
6) if you complete the dungeons in proper order, no way you can be under- or over-levelled
7) you can kill as many summons as you wish. when your equilibrium level rises, spells start failing with the corresponding chance.

Re: Dumb questions thread
1. Saves incompatible, achievements/unlocks stay. This data is held in your Windows profile directory (not in the main game folder).
2. Delete old version, download new version. There are ways to minimise downloading levels by getting the nomusic version and transferring the music files across, but it's a bit fiddly.
3. In the Spoilers forum :P
5. Yes, you can copy your character save folder. Not sure this would help with builds though. Also on Adventure mode you have extra lives to play with in case of mistakes. If you donate you get an Exploration mode that means you can always resurrect. Also for build testing I recommend playing on the Arena campaign (unlocked after interacting with an NPC in Derth) as you gain experience much faster in it.
6. Not really, no scumming allowed. Also most zones level up with you to a certain extent, so scumming wouldn't help a great deal anyway. This is a deliberate part of the game's design so as not to encourage boring play.
7. Nah, they're disposable. Equilibrium gives a chance of talents failing. If you hover over your Equilibrium bar it gives a bit of explanation.
