When you start up the game and load a character, does it say something like 'Disabled profile, bad game version' ? If so, then you have edited a file somewhere or you have some error with a file. Either A) Remove the edits and make the file[s] like they were originally ; or ; B) Redownload whichever beta the character is on [you won't lose the character] and run the game normally.

If that is not the case, then maybe you are not connected to the internet, or it is dropping while the game is saving. There are also some other possible answers but I am not aware of many.

I have been trying to run the game (b24) off of a jump drive, switching back and forth from two computers that have had the game loaded on them as well. I thought I had played a higher fighter to lvl 8 on the jumpdrive while I was on the first computer, but when I took the jumpdrive out of the first computer, brought it home and plugged it in the second computer, the character was no where to be found. Is there a way to set up the game on a jumpdrive?

as far as I know, no, sorry man.. your savegames are kept on your harddrive, in your user folder. If you wanted to risk messing your computer up something fierce, you could try and set your user directory to be in your flashdrive, but then you'd probably experience serious problems on one computer if you ever took the flashdrive to the other. You could ask for an option to choose where to save your games, maybe you'd get that.
Having satellite internet is a lot like relying on the processes described in those RFC's for your internet. Except, instead of needing to worry about statues interrupting your connection, this time you worry about the weather. I have satellite internet. Fun, no?

The easy way would be to just copy the save game directory manually, to and from the portable storage device, as needed.

The slightly less easy way would be to mount the portable storage device somewhere, and then make ~/.t-engine/ (or similar) a symbolic link to the mount point.

The even less easy way would be to mount the portable storage device as ~/.t-engine/ (or similar). And by less easy, I mean "possible on Linux/Mac, probably not possible on Windows", but then again, maybe it's possible and I simply don't know how.

I am trying to get some combat accuracy for a mage, is this possible? Without access to the general physical tree it seems kind of pointless to go for a geomancer who favors stoneskin and crystaline focus.

Combat accuracy only applies to melee attacks using your weapons, and bow/sling attacks IIRC, so not sure how useful it would be. Also, you can buy access to the tree (at 1.00 mastery) in Last Hope for 50 gold in one of the stores.

Thank you, i am pretty much trying to make an arcane blade, only with a better selection of spells to play with. kind of mage-heavy instead of fighter heavy

Is there any point to levelling Imbue Item beyond lvl 1/5? All the talent descriptors appear to be the same for each level.

Gems come in five tiers, corresponding to the other materials. Higher tier gems give better effects. Each talent level in Imbue Item will let you use gems up to the corresponding tier, so it makes sense to level it up to the tier of items you're seeing.

Ah cheers, I'd suspected it'd have similar behaviour to gem extraction but there wasn't any indication :)

Uh, I'm a newcomer to ToME (I may have played it in some form in the deep dark past, I'm not sure, I've played many roguelikes), and it looks awesome, but I can't get it to run. I'm running Windows Vista, and I've tried running beta 28, with sound, and beta 27, without sound.

After extracting the files, I run the executable file and the application loads. Music starts playing, and the status bar for the application says "Main Menu". There is a cursor in the top left corner. However, the rest of the screen is blank, and stays blank if left. If I click anything, or move the window, then windows decides the program has stopped responding.

Any clues? I'm not sure what information you need on my laptop to get it to work? I'll happily provide specs.

My best suggestion would be to check you have the latest drivers for your graphics card. (Yeah, I know, that advice is very odd in the context of a roguelike.)

Also, give the link in my sig a try - that's a T-Engine module with a couple of tweaks to the initial engine interface. If it runs then I can give you direct advice on how to get ToME running.

My graphics card has had no drivers released for it, ever, due to it's being a laptop card. Still, I don't normally have problems running 3D applications.

T-Engine loads, and it can run Broken Bottle, when I download it from your page. I'll try running the Beta 28 module of ToME in it.

EDIT: OK, ToME loads, but complains that it might break due to incompatibilities. Any idea what is up with the T-Engine I got from here?

EDIT Redux: Yup, it's unplayable - I get LUA errors (I'm not really sure what LUA is.. some sort of high level language?) whenever I try to do anything.
