I'm reading the description of Solipsism (talent) on the wiki and on winners in the character vault, and it looks like it would be significant damage reduction with 5 points invested: 50% damage converted to psi, then about 40% of that ignored, for about 20% ignored damage over all.
It also seems that 50% of healing/regen goes there instead, so having fungus+regen would let me constantly pump my psi levels so I don't lose speed.
Is there anything I'm missing that stops this being as good as it sounds?
Is maxed Solipsism as good for DR as it sounds?

Putting More points on the skill will reduce your HP rating a lot. While most of the damage done is done to your PSI it will considerably slow you down.
It's nice to have some extra HP as backup for cases where you run our of PSI.

doesn't only first point in each skill reduce hp?
and only from con, which, wont make a difference anyway unless you actually picked it.
the talents reduce the rating bu 0.25 each, only on first lvl.
so if you have all of the talents, it reduce the hp you gain from con by 1.
so if you didn't put any point into con, you lose 10 hp.
and now before you say "but it reduce the life rating by 50%!!"
yes. but its a "one time adjustment only", and your argument was putting MORE points into it.
i don't know how good or bad the talents actually are, but your argument is invalid, unless the person intended to put loads of points in con.
if you didn't, you should not be concerned with this drawback.

The only downside is that the more damage in your Psi the more chances you have to get below your Psi threshold and lose global speed, usually resulting in death.

I would say that ideally if you have L life and P psi, the optimum level of the solipsism talent would be such that the damage (or healing) repartition is L/P.
Thanks to all the +hp items (that are much more frequent and powerful than +psi items), in general, in the late game, you have much more life than psi, even with the life rating penalty.
So a 50/50 repartition is not optimal.
For instance, assume you have 1000HP and 500psi, and that you take 1000 damage.
If you solipsism talent is such that damage is 50/50, after that you have 500 life and 0 psi, meaning a terrible speed penalty and no way to activate any talent because you lack psi resource.
If it is 60/40, you are slightly better (400 life and 100 psi). Your speed penalty is reduced and you at least have some psi in order to react.
For this specific situation, 75/25 would even be better, leaving you with 250 life and 250 psi, with an almost unsignificant speed penalty. But it slightly reduces your pseudo life.
Indeed the best would be to be left at 2/3 500 HP and 1/3 500 psi, were you can still take 500 damage without dying and with a minimal speed penalty.
Of course all of this is largely dependent of your gear/race/level, but to my experience 50/50 is not properly balanced. In general, as a rule of thumb, I consider that 60/40 is a good balance and for this reason, I always only raise solipsism to level 3 or 4.

Re: Is maxed Solipsism as good for DR as it sounds?
1) Thanks for the explanation ghostbuster; I had wondered why some people recommended not maxing it.
Correct me if I'm wrong though, but 5/5 Solipsism splits it 50/50 and then reduces the damage to psi by 40%, right?
So if you have 1000HP and 500psi and take 1000 damage, you'd be on 500HP and 200psi.
Having said that, there seem to be diminishing returns on extra points anyway, so I might stay at 3/5 unless I notice health getting too low.
2) Am I right in thinking that Dismissal will be rarely useful? Won't 60% of mental save usually be much lower than any damage recieved from serious threats? (I'm tempted to skip the 3 Solipsism talents beyond the first to keep the max speed loss at 20% which will be offset by my Yeek racial in the worst case.)

Those smaller damage numbers are inflicted much more often though.
Dismissal is great at protecting against things with multiple elements and damage over time effects.
They might not one shot you, but they can still kill you.

Dismissal is mainly good because it gives you a mind crit roll every time it succeeds.
