Ok... most classes are fairly simple to understand to medium to understand... then there is mindslayer.

I... dont get the talent trees to even figure how to start to make one?

Pick three and stick to them, that's what you want.
Absorption is pretty much necessary; there's your psi regain and there's your defense for the rest of the game.
Projection I personally don't find great but it's nice and versatile.
Focus is easy and nice.
Psi-fighting is your generic melee combat tree; basically a sunstitution for the lack of Warrior ones.
Augmented Striking is tricky and combo-ish.
Perhaps someone can explain it in more detail because I'm largely inexperienced with the class.

Pick what weapons you want to use where, then pick how you want to kill things. Add Absorption.

Is there anything in particular you don't get?

i cant figure out how quite to start... what stats/skills i should work toward...

Stats are Willpower/Cunning, since Beyond the Flesh makes magic for you which makes your weapons work off that. Don't get it knocked off you, it's bad!
As for talents, watch scalings. In early game, just seek whichever does the most damage per your talent point. If you're feeling bad, level Absorption.
