Cursed Aura opportunity cost

#1 Post by Requia »

So I'm looking at cursed aura, and while it looks good, I'm not sure if the heavy investment in generics and a cat point needed to get it up to speed are worth not having the other generics the Doomed has available. Thoughts from people more experienced with the class?
Failed saving throw against terrible idea and opened the wrong door. Again.

... Cat point required?

The general consensus is that Cursed Aura is recommended on a doomed not going antimagic, and would be spread too thin on a doomed going AM.

I personally believe you can pull off AM, the weaker version of fungus (heal boosting instead of regeneration boosting), and cursed aura easily enough, and if you're willing to deal with stuns like every *other* class does, even go full hog on fungus tree, but I seem to get shot down more often than not when I express that build plan.

The cat point in cursed aura is just a new thing since the talents actually scale to 6.0 now. Previously, 5/4 would net you 2 full curses with careful itemization. With a cat point and 5/5, itemization can put you at 4 or 5 full curses. It's a new thing.

I like cursed aura. A lot. It's magically good- and it provides some effects that are hard to find on AM.

Whether you're going Cornac or not is also a factor. Folks that go Cornac for the immediate Rampage unlock don't have a racial tree to spend generics on, which frees up a few more for things. Similarly, if your racial tree is something that you want to go deep into, then that makes it less appealing. Other generic sinks also come into question. Do you want to run dual mindstars? is there an escort tree you're eyeing? (answer: probably not, but you might be weird).

Still, the general rule of thumb of "AM, probably not. Otherwise, might well be worth it" seems about right for starters.

Also, as noted elsewhere, the AM issue isn't just about generics. Cursed Aura complicates the itemization juggle. AM chops out a fair number of otherwise good pieces of gear. Either one of these on its own is tolerable, but trying to deal with both at once is just unpleasant.
