I feel like Adept and not needing to betray an alchemist before going to Zigur massively changed how to bring up a Doomed right out of the gate. Before I would always pick up Cornac for an extra mastery point in Shadows either way. Now 4 Shadows and talent level 6 in Cursed Aura are plain guaranteed now.

Prodigies these days for the class are just very much changed. You could also run Blighted Summoning pretty well thanks to Shadow Mages (probably best with Shalore due to Grace), though I can't really say yet whether or not your nightmares or walking corpses inherit that buff.

Oh, and don't discount Halfling here; Militant Mind brings a great big boost to Mindpower, and they can take advantage of that extra critmult the most even with the luck minus from curses.

In my view 3 or 4 shadows only makes a small difference in whether you survive.

3 shadows can do everything 4 shadows can do a little slower in most cases. And more importantly 4 shadows will get wrecked by a wildfire arch mage rand boss in the same number of turns and I am not convinced blighted summoning addresses that.

Adept has synergy with antimagic shield, Cursed aura, deflection and to a smaller extent the shadows. You should be stacking layers of defense of different types instead of all-in on shadows

Yeah, once I went Far East and died to a first orc patrol, like orc hit me with Brandish log siad soethign about damage being reflected to me - my enthusiasm about shadows was greatly descreased. They die extremely easy later on, damned anorithils and such especially dangerous.
But Cursed Auras always with you.
