So, miionles Necro can be build in a few ways, as a traditionalist I prefer darkness damage.
As such, buildis revolving around crossing 1 hp point as often as possible, and devouring @soul" as often as possible.
Reasons are:
Across the Veil skill, that deal free damage every time char's health points cross 1 hp point. I should note that damage does't happen instantly - instead it seem to happen at the end of the turn.
Grim Shadow gives us free damage and every time "soul" is ripped I guess only once per turn, also wording suggest it only works when you have less "soul" number then max? - at least description claims so, aside bugs.
Golden Age of Necromancy gives us INVULNERABILITY for 2 turns (aside bugs) every time character cross 1 hp threshhold.
Athernal Night is a heal of % of damage you deal at the end of turn - thus you will be crossing 1 hp point even more often!
Impending Doom could also trigger Grim Shadow damage ability every 2 turns.
Thus, building like this and supporting skills with Adept, I quite easily got to lvl45.
It's time to nerf?
PS However, no matter how I like Adept, the best pick for second prodidgy is Cauteraze, because nukes are the biggest threat for Necro, if he being eliminated in single powerful hit, then invulnerability form Golden Age of Necromancy never kicks in.

Re: Quick basic notes about minionless Necro 1.7b1
I agree but Adept is comically good now, given that it lets you put 1 point in a range of categories and then have it automatically bump you up to the equivalent of 3. It makes hitting the natural break-point much easier and you can spread your talent points way, thus gaining the equivalent of 30 or even 40 talent points. It's hard to beat that. This is especially true given the high life rating of a lich and the existence of stormshields.
Yes, you are susceptible to being one-shot but what class isn't? If you invest and get lucky to pick up a couple of talents from escorts, you can get your armor and armor hardness way up. Plus, with a handful of minions hanging about, your odds of even getting targeted for massive damage is reasonably low.
On Normal and Nightmare, I think Adept is the clear winner. On Insane, it's a coin flip... maybe.

Re: Quick basic notes about minionless Necro 1.7b1
No, I did that with old Adept.
Also, came to write that - I did Heart of Gloom and Rhaloren, using only healing from Earthen Beeds, adn that Necro healing spell, shielding and shattering rune and psionic shield torque.
No damage spell was used. All damage came from Cross the Veil and Spikes of Decrepitude.
I think Torture Souls is too good - you hit EVERYONE on screen (yeah, those who affected bySoul Leech) and it even doesn't cost a soul.
Let it at leeast cost a soul.
