New class idea: demon summoning mage
I'm not sure if this is the right place for this so if it isn't, I apologize and will re-post as appropriate. Anyway, on to the idea:
I'll call it the mad mage, one that summons demons with a chance of losing control of them.
In essence, the summons take multiple turns to cast which is spent just sitting around as a target (perhaps drawing a rune or symbol on the ground and if you move, you have to start over and the skill goes on cool down) however the summons stay with you until you they die, however you'd have an aura like the necrotic aura that reduces your control over them if you're too far away....
They can come in a couple varieties: damage dealers versus support demons which offer passive auras that improve defense, offense, and/or life. Maybe a third option for a type of soul-summoning demon that you bind with, granting you strengths such that you could create a melee mage.
They can drain mana semi-permanently like a sustain but also things like life and/or stats.
Also, there's always that chance (based off of willpower, cunning, and magic as a combo dependent upon the type of summon) that you'll lose control of them and they'll turn into an enemy.
It be snazzy if some of the branches were elemental demons (such as a lesser, greater, and great elemental) that were immune or could absorb their element... making for a cool combo mage that could reign fire down upon their own summons and enemies.
My thinking is that you'd need something like 10 points in magic, willpower, cunning, and constitution for each additional summon.
I also think this type of mage should have access to some standard mage trees but should generally be short on mana because of the cost of summons.
Their general tree should include improvements to their ability to retain control.
Anyone like this idea or am I totally off-base? I don't code but if anyone likes the idea, I'll happily assist in whatever way I can.

Re: New class idea: demon summoning mage
I believe a class to this effect has long been in the "planned, maybe" phase.
Re: New class idea: demon summoning mage
I've got one planned.
I have too many classes planned

My feedback meter decays into coding. Give me feedback and I make mods.

My Vector can summon Wretchlings, and more summoning is coming in future revision of Nullpack.

Re: New class idea: demon summoning mage
I really like the idea. I have no clue if all the details you said could be balanced. But the basic concept of summoning different demons (could be lvl dependent and skill lvl dependent) sounds good.
Reminds me: in baldurs gate you could summon a very powerful demon that you couldnt control, best case scenario was that he didnt see you (you had protection from evil or something like that) . That could be one skill set.
so different lines of skills would be
a)weaker controlable demons
b)Medium lvl risky: if you summon them, the rest of your actions are very limited (most spells unusuable, cant move, something like that) until demon dies or breaks control.
c)High lvl uncontrolable demons. : this kind you would summon and get away!

So I need to move this as it's in the wrong place...
I don't see how to delete the entire thread (forgive both my ignorance and delays... I'm super busy) so I'll just repost it for now.
Thanks again

Well then, I should dig around and see if there's any discussion on it. I'd love to involve myself in that a bit. I really like mage and summoning classes but I find the current ones a bit lacking in some elements.
Thanks.
Re: New class idea: demon summoning mage
With all the Fearscape, the invasion portals and the Urh'Rok various references from items and elite units, a demonic based mage/summoner class would fit very well in the ToME4 universe.
I can see the background justification of that class being about the sorcerers working for Urh'Rok, hoping to be rewarded by their master if they help him taking over Maj Eyal, and being granted various demonic powers to achieve that goal.
That could be a specific ending to that class, with the near infinite energies of the portal in the endgame Sanctum, it could be used to breach the boundaries between Maj Eyal and Urh'Rok's domains.
A bit like the Yeeks that can currently choose an alternate ending with using those energies for brainwashing the world into obeying their "Way".

It isn't a choice for them. A yeek winner will die for the Way to bring the world into unity with the Way, whether they like it for not.Robsoie wrote:A bit like the Yeeks that can currently choose an alternate ending with using those energies for brainwashing the world into obeying their "Way".

Not so! They have a choice!
They can destroy their mortal body and become a lich, thus triumphing for themselves, over the evils of the way. (Unless that got fixed.) This makes them the second greatest double-agent in Eyal.

Well of course it's not a bug. After all, any society always has dissenters! Even those with oppresive totalitarian rulership (Which is what the way is), will form eventual dissenters and resistance. Ignore the whole telepathic thing, clearly they're hiding a part of their thoughts. Even a telepath could lie, obviously.
