Are bombs supposed to hurt escorts?

Based on the tooltip for Alchemist Protection, I expected bombs to hurt party members other than myself and my golem. So I was in for a pleasant surprise when I controlled my golem during an escort quest. Tactical AI took over and threw a bomb that obliterated all monsters in sight, but the escort was unharmed.
