Hexkin thread. (mark 1)

#1 Post by trenggiling »

Hi there.
The Hexkin are a race I want to make.
But I have no clue how to create addons. (apparently you need to buy the game on steam before you can even try) :(
Looks like I spent all that time working on the sprites for nothing...

Unless there is a way to make addons, without first owning the game on steam.

what makes you think that you need steam?
anyone can make some text files and zip them together to a .teea file.

unless you have some technical difficulties.
after that, when you post the addon on the main site, anyone can download it and just put it in the right foldder.

as far as i know, there is no special procedure on installing a mod.
i myself have round 20 (didn't counted) and they work fine without any "permits" rituals or paperwork.

This site is a tutorial on how to make addons.
http://te4.org/wiki/Addons#Getting_Started
And the first thing it says is.
You're making an addon. The addon is named "coolstuff". The first thing you do is make a directory "tome-coolstuff" inside your Steam install of ToME. On my mac, that path is:

So yeah, you don't need to buy the game at all. That's just telling you how to find the game folder if it's installed with steam.
Addons: Arcane Blade Tweaks, Fallen Race, Monk Class, Weapons Pack
Currently working on Elementals. It's a big project, so any help would be appreciated. :)

Nah, addons are a thing way before ToME went on Steam. Also, you don't need to buy the game to make addons. In the irc channel there are (almost) always tech savvy people who can give you more practical advices than me :). And third - that Hexkin doll looks mighty delicious, great stuff!

Gak! :x
This is frustrating!
I'm trying to use the bunnymorph addon as a baseline to help me get started.
But I can't even change the name without causing it to crash.
What is up with that?
(Note that I changed both the name of the addon itself, and the long/short names in the init file)

Here's the topic: topic!

Basically you can access it with a stand alone client (like HexChat or chatzilla, etc.) or directly in you browser via mibbit.

Good luck!

Has anyone told you that a teaa file needs to have no compression to work yet?

Okay... Now I have a ghost of an addon that I want to upload.
I followed the steps from this site http://te4.org/wiki/Addons but this is what happened.

1: Main Menu -> Options -> Developer Mode (bottom option)
Works just fine.

2: Start a new game.
Works just fine.

3: Note that being in Developer Mode puts an extra screen between "New Game" and building a character. Pick the top option ("ToME").
I did not see this "extra screen"

4: Hit ctrl+a and pick the bottom option (just hit the up arrow)
The bottom option on that menu was "weakdamage" and a quick scan of the other options made it clear that there wasn't anything about addons in there.

have you done the "overload superload" stuff?
just putting the race together wont work if the game doesn't know it's playable.

The addon functions just fine.
Sure the talents don't do anything... at all, but it still works like any other addon.
Maybe I'm supposed to put it in a zipped folder... I'll go give that a try.

Edit: Hu that's weird... it doesn't seem to show up as a zip or teaa...

Just leave it as a folder. The game can zip it for you.
