Re: Old RPG Tileset - beta3e
I hear what you guys are saying and tend to agree with it. Do you feel the same way about the other pictures without the high def sprites?
For example, this pic is 64x64. No hd-ish sprites that I recently added. Do the monsters contrast with the player and terrain too much?
How does wrathroot look at 48x48?
Queenbitch 64x64?

Re: Old RPG Tileset - beta3e
I personally think they do. However you are at least consistent in style across all the monster sprites, so it's not too bad.

Re: Old RPG Tileset - beta3e
I have one thing to say about this now that there are so many tiles obtained.
*ahem* - I love that I know about 95% of these sprites by personally bashing them to death in their original games. :D

Yeah, it's set as ASCII only in the code.
But you seriously think cartoony graphics would be suitable for Broken Bottle? Then I must consider myself a failure as a game developer :(
Broken Bottle specifically plays on the abstract nature of the ASCII interface, especially with the "piranhas". I think graphics would rather take away from the atmosphere.

Re: Old RPG Tileset - beta3e
I didn't give the game much time to be honest, and it's not because I didn't like what I saw or that it wasn't fun or anything like that. I was spending alot of time cramming sprites into ToME then, and had some extras that didn't really fit into ToME. So I checked out BB really quickly to see if I could use some of those extra sprites within that setting. I had a few good looking drunks and tried to get some grimy terrain tiles started but gave up as soon as I realized there was no tile support. I wasn't really spending much time playing either game, just modifying the art. I made a mental note to go back to BB when I had more time. Don't take it to heart please!
I agree that you should play a game more thoroughly before making art decisions. But I disagree that a cartoon-like art style could not work with Broken Bottle. All sorts of art styles could work, as long as the artist was consistent with his delivery. Realistic, cartoony, washed out, dark, bright, Quake-brown, etc. Even if you have a specific art style in mind, you should be open to others you didn't think of. Sometimes, albeit rarely, a cutesy art direction in a serious game actually works for the game. The 16-bit era Shadowrun games for snes and genesis are more specifically what I had in mind for BB, but I was going to incorporate anything that worked.
You also can't EVER consider yourself a failure based on one person's opinion, man! Especially unformed opinions (uninformed also works here). If I listened to everyone that told me "that's not gonna work" I'd never do anything!

Re: Old RPG Tileset - beta3e
Heh, I was joking about being a failure. Others have played the game properly and said it was crap, and I really don't mind. I mostly develop for my own fun.
Though there likely are art styles that work well for my game I also think that abstract ASCII has its own power. There are clever ways to play with people's perceptions that could be taken away by graphics.

Same link from post 1 to download?
Re: Old RPG Tileset - beta3e
Thank you gentlemen! I'm having alot of fun with the new betas!
I'm gonna go and estimate that this is about 80% done. There's sooo much new stuff with every ToME beta that I have a hard time keeping up! I still have to finish maybe 80 or so npcs, get all the armors and weapons more consistent, finish up all the new costumes
and do some more running around in-game to make sure i'm not missing anything.
1,600 tiles are finished at last check. Phew! Only another 1600 to go!
Over 1000 of the leftovers are easy duplicates though so it's not as bad as it sounds.
384/480 npc
733/766 terrain done. still remaining - some portals, sun/star, lava mountains
172/307 object done. still remaining - alchemy items, potions, elixers, couple weapons
7/23 unique
19/32 trap
427/1593 player done. still remaining - halfling male, orc, golem, many weapons, many pieces of armor. can reduce # to about 1200 since i'm not going to use underwear, sandals or hoods
1742/2808
A lot of this is just duplicate armor / mirrored weapons too! Not quite 80% but I'll take it
Pabo - Yes, you can download the last release from the 1st post... BUT it is missing many, many things from the latest ToME betas!! If you really want to test it though, you could download ToME beta 25 or 26 and install oldRPG on that version. If you extract the zip properly you should be able to pick "Old RPG" from the Graphic Options or Graphic Mode menu. Good luck sir, lemme know if you like it!
DG - I thought you 'd like that
The only thing is that I had to overwrite shockbolt's map because it wouldn't work from the old rpg folder! I noticed the same thing with the animated boss on that level too. Actually, I wasn't sure what to name the tile for that guy either... got any help on that?
Finally, I can release this as-is right now if you guys wanna check it out, but it's still missing quite a bit. What ya think?

Nice!
However stralite is a dark metal and voratun is a light metal, you've got it reversed
