Hi. I was wondering if anyone knows if there's a sprite dump from ToME around, and/or how DarkGod thinks about using his sprites for other projects?
I'm wondering because in addition to ToME, I play a lot of Dominions 5, and do some modding for it. Some of the sprites in ToME would work great as bases for sprites in Dominions mods with only minimal conversion and freshing up (though most other sprites wouldn't work well at all due to ToME sprites often being top-down or front view, while Dom sprites are always side-view).
Of course, if DarkGod has come out strongly against using his work in other projects I wouldn't do it even if the sprites are available. I hope it's not a rude question to ask, and that this is the appropriate subforum.
Regards, Ilja
Sprites - is there a dump, and what can we do with them?

The sprites are accessible in your installed game folder under game/modules/tome-gfx.team.
Rename "team" to "zip", unzip, and voila. Most of what you're probably looking for is in the shockbolt folder, and they tend to be 64x64 or 64x128.
As for using them in other games, I have no idea! I just modify them for tome. It's likely covered by the included usage license if you read through that.

On the topic of graphics in general, https://opengameart.org/ is a great resource if you haven't already looked there, and I've found that open-license community-made RPG Maker VM/XP graphics can also be a good source for artwork that can serve as the base for roguelike tiles. The monster battlers in particular tend to be drawn at the correct perspective (whether front or sideview, RM resources do both), and shadows can be added to give them depth with minimal effort.

Thanks, as simple as that? Wonderful! Now that you mention it I realize I've done so before some years ago (for modding tome), but forgot it was possible. Thanks a lot!Lexirad wrote:Rename "team" to "zip", unzip, and voila. Most of what you're probably looking for is in the shockbolt folder, and they tend to be 64x64 or 64x128.
Yeah, I love opengameart, and for roguelikes I'd wager it's perfect. Thing is that dominions is a very different beast and has a specific art style and it's not easy finding good matches. I generally just mod already-existing sprites from the base game (or it's cousing, Conquest of Elysium) but just recently came back to ToME from a long hiatus and realized how well some of the sprites would fit in the game with only minor retouching, such as some of the Drakes and the Quasit. On the topic of graphics in general, https://opengameart.org/ is a great resource if you haven't already looked there, and I've found that open-license community-made RPG Maker VM/XP graphics can also be a good source for artwork that can serve as the base for roguelike tiles.

Huh, I'll have to check that game out. Based on the art style at a glance, I would definitely look into RMMV sideview battlers. Thalzon has a very large set here that he opened for general use in RM games but if you asked he'd probably allow their use elsewhere as well (his older sets are open for any commercial or non-commercial game use): https://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.ph ... ers.46685/
They might be a little cartoony for what you want but it gives you an idea of the resources available -- adding shadows and some shading to these and scaling them down to tile-sized looks like they'd fit the aesthetic in the screenshot you posted decently, and if you're handy in editing programs you could make them a little more realistic at smaller sizes without too much effort.

Just to clear things up a bit, if you look at the "COPYING-MEDIA" file in the ToME installation folder, you'll see:
Apart from the interesting spelling
, that doesn't mean necessarily that he won't give you permission to use them for modding, but still you have to reach him directly by mail or in chat, etc.
(and as a side note as the creator of some/many of these, I have transferred all rights to DG, so don't have the right to give permissions myself).
Cheers
Code: Select all
All the medias located in all the "/data/gfx" folders are granted to use with the Tales of Maj'Eyal game only.
Please contact darkgod@te4.org for more informations.
