I started this addon way back when arcane blades had the two hand maiming tree unlocked at the start. I found playing a staff-centric arcane blade to be a nice change of pace when I was lucky enough to find two or more alchemist escorts. So, here is an addon enabling staff combat for arcane blades from character birth.

This addon also tweaks the staff combat tree slightly to make staff combat a blend of martial and magical prowess. I heard a bit of griping about some of the standard staff combat talents in IRC and in game chat. Namely, alchemists would pump up channel staff and ignore most other talents in the tree. From my own play experience, I found that taking staff combat from an escort and unlocking the tree at 0.8 mastery made blunt thrust useless without very specific equipment or two category points spent. So, I implemented a few changes to make the rest of the staff combat tree more attractive as an escort reward. Special consideration was placed to make the tree no less useful for alchemists.

This addon was implemented using data + hooks, so it should work with almost any other addon as long as they do not also modify staff combat.

    • Arcane Blade granted spell/staff-combat at mastery 1.1, locked at birth.
    • Defensive posture had its bonuses buffed and is now a technique that scales off physical power.
    • Blunt thrust changed to use stamina and magic. While it is a spell and can be disrupted, the talent is not affected by silence. Also changed blunt thrust's unerring strike to be obtainable at talent level five or with five raw talent points spent. This makes the skill more attractive to those with 0.8/0.9 mastery.
