First try at ToME, Dwarf Bulwark

So to take my first steps in ToME, I've decided to do something simple and sturdy, hence the short little tank. I'm really enjoying it but I have to admit I don't really know what I'm doing. I've cleared most of the basic dungeons available on the starting continent and reached level 20, but I don't know where to go from here, build-wise or location wise.

I could try the complex revealed by the halfing ruins, or the temporal rift (which sounds like it may unlock the chronomancer class!). I could also head to zigur to step on the path of mage hunter, or go to Derth or Last Hope to deal with the commotion there.

As for my build, I now have two category points and I have no idea what I should spend them on. Unlocking a new class category? Getting better at the awesome shield skills? More inscription slots I badly need? And what do I do with my stat points, I'm getting the impression that other than Thick Skin Constitution isn't that useful, so maybe more Strength or even Dex for the skills synergy?

What sort of equipment should I look for?

Stats/talents:

- Use your first category point to get another Inscription. Inscription should probably be Movement or Heroism.
- Next category point goes to Battle Tactics. 1/5/0/0 the tree asap for Step Up. After that more points in GWF and Bleeding Edge aren't bad.
- Further category points should be used for a final inscription slot and probably Dirty Fighting, as Cripple is a very powerful debuff for bosses.
- Stat-wise max out Str/Dex. Con isn't that good.
- You *need* to get 1/4/0/0 in Conditioning immediately. Unflinching Resolve is one of the best status removal talents in the entire game.
- A point in Perfect Strike can be pretty useful for Dreadfell.

Gear:

- For weapons, stuff with strong on-hit effects are good. In particular ones that inflict insanity, torment or cripple. On-crit artifacts are fantastic for Bulwark due to Assault.
- Look for shields with a good range of resistances, as your block ability will then be able to block non-physical damage.
- Wrap of Stone is pretty much the best cloak in the game, so keep that forever. Girdle of Calm Waters is also an amazing belt, that you probably won't replace unless you get really lucky with loot.
- General good stuff is stun/confuse resistance, elemental resists, crit damage multiplier, +%physical damage/penetration and str/dex.

Locations:

- Storming the City (the Derth quest) is very dangerous. I wouldn't recommend going until you get 5/5 Step Up as you'll be attacked by multiple high damage casters, and without a way to quickly close and kill you'll get torn apart. Maxing your stun and lightning resistance is highly recommended, and cold resistance doesn't hurt for the next part.
- The same applies for Temporal Rift. The first floor makes you move 3x as slow while you get attacked by teleporting, debuffing casters who get knocked away by melee attacks. Very dangerous for a slow melee class like Bulwark.
- Halfling Ruins isn't too bad, except if you get unlucky on the first floor and get trapped by a master archer in open space. You can get a nice permanent bonus and class unlock if you save the NPC at the bottom, but that's quite difficult without being able to teleport him or the boss away. Best bet is to Rush, Shield Pummel and then hope you can kill him before he kills the NPC.
- I wouldn't recommend antimagic. You have an excellent cloak that would become unusable, and those generic points are far better used to get Unflinching Resolve up asap.
- If you've done all the T2 dungeons (old forest, sandworm lair, daikara, maze) then you're probably ready for Dreadfell.
- After Dreadfell you might be level 24. An event may pop on the world map talking about a crypt, this area is widely considered to be the most lethal place in the game and should be avoided unless you're supremely confident in your class.

I second the advice to spend cat points on movement infusion and Battle Tactics tree for Step Up. Also consider putting more points into Rush to improve the range. This is all in the interests of moving as quickly as possible when you need to. Bulwarks can tank the early game when everyone is trying to hit them with fancy sticks, but later when there are heaps of casters doing massive non-physical attacks, you better have rockets strapped to your tank so you can kill them or escape before they kill you.
