Note that he died with a Blood of Life in his inventory. It appears that, like other unique items, it can be generated more than once. He didn't drink it a second time, for all the good it would have done him. The RNG had obviously decided that he wasn't leaving the Bad Room alive.
I have a feeling that I would have run out of luck before the High Peak anyway. Leveling is much harder to do, and bosses are few and far between in the Far East. I managed to kill Grushnak (barely), but those open prides were going to be rough. I was using my runes and infusions like crazy, and had lots of fun doing it, but they weren't really scaling fast enough to keep up with the opposition I was facing. It seems that those ridiculously overpowered runes we occasionally find in the early game are about what you can expect for the rest of the game. Some tuning is most definitely needed, but I know Darkgod has mentioned that he's already on it.
Overall, the game feels much harder than b13, and that's a good thing. The crypt where you need to rescue the woman is still a deathtrap, though. The minimum level is set to 20 now, but I predict near a near 100% fatality rate for most classes if they go in there under 30. I did it somewhat after level 30 and barely survived. Weirdly, I did manage to rescue the girl within the time limit (1 turn to spare). Unstoppable made that possible. I failed utterly at escorting her safely from the dungeon, but she showed up at home safe and sound anyway.
Reknor needs to have its max level increased. I was about 35 when I went through it thanks to the new western content. (I did everything in the west except for the spellblaze, which I avoided due to character-breaking bugs).
